Old Garrard Changer

Hi there. I have just aquired this interesting Garrard TT changer. It has counterbalance and anti-skate and is equipped with a Shure cartridge. The stylus has "Hi Track" on it. Underneath I found a Garrard Series II Synchro Lab motor. It has 78,33,45, and 16 speeds.Does anyone know which model this is and the era? Any info would be great! I have pics which I have to resize first. Thanks!

I think this is a 72B? If the cartridge says "Hi Track," it's a Shure, am I right? Someone else chime in here. Nice table, I believe. Fred Longworth would know more.

It looks a lot like the SL-72B, but it's not. Note that Garrard made several models around the same time as the SL-72B which were highly similar in appearance.

The dominant failure mode of this series of Garrards is that the amber-colored grease changes into bubble gum.

Also, idler wheel condition is critical. You can resurface the idler on #1000 sandpaper and treat with rubber restorer, but often it will need to be replaced. Send to Terry's Rubber Rollers.

Come on guys! I'm here in the UK, it's a US-only model and even i know it's a model 74M (as it says in the front righhand corner!!) :D

As far as i know, it is based around the same mechanics as the SL72, but has a different arm - possibly a lower mass device.

Should perform quite well, but heed Fred's worthy advice on the hardened grease and the idler wheel condition.

Oh ,yes, and give it a clean will you? :huge:

Thanks for the info. There is no model ID on this table anywhere though. Sure is dusty eh? This was trhift shop find and for the 2 dollars I paid I think I may have not too bad a table. It won't replace my Thorens 160 but I may use it in my bedroom . I will have to look at the uderside to check condition.

If nothing else, that is a sweet base... you could probably pop in a 95B (top of the line at the time?) with no trouble.

Look at the attached photo, lower right corner. I have circled in red the model number. It's easy to overlook.

Looking at the cartridge, in one picture the stylus plastic grip might be yellow, in another pic it might be a pale green.

IIRC, yellow=M91E, lt green =M93E

There's a difference in the stylus compliance between the two. I would track the 91E at 1.5 grams in that arm, the 93E at 2.5 grams.

It has a white stylus with Hi Track on it....and thanks for the locator..it is a 74M. Learning more every day here. I am not a fan of changers with the whole drop the record thing...but...is this a good table for day to day use with a basic spindle then?
