Old Shure cart, a mystery to me….

I was going thru an old box of [reel to reel] tapes of my late fathers while at my mothers house yesterday and found this Shure cartridge [model # M91ED] outfitted with an unmarked mystery stylus.

I “Shure” [pun intended] would like to learn more about this cart and stylus. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Looks like a Pickering stylus to me. Not sure which it might be, but it resembles a D AT2 type I have. Does that stylus actually fit the M91ED? I know none of my Pickering styli physically fit a M75 type cartridge.

Bill, I have an M91ED, but I'm not currently using it. It's a decent cartridge. Stylus isn't too expensive. The stylus used to run in the range of $25 - 30 from Jico. I have a better cartridge now, but I played a lot of records with that M91ED and was happy with it.

It was inserted in the Shure when I found it. It slid out easy enough?

A Shure M24H that came on a turntable from GW. I may end up going back to the M91ED, though. Jico raised the price on the N24H stylus to near $90 from about $60. Not sure it's that much better than the M91ED.

That was my question. That stylus has a round shank on it like a Pickering and unlike any Shure I've ever dealt with. They all had diamond shaped shanks. In fact, if you look at the cartridge body it looks like it may be designed for a diamond shaped shank.

The correct stylus for the M91ED DOES have a diamond shaped shank.

Oh, I'm sure that's true. The thing is the shank on that Pickering? stylus is the wrong shape. Somebody decided to try putting it in that cartridge anyway. If they had to force it, even a little, they could definitely have damaged the cartridge. The innards of a cartridge are very delicate.

Knowing how my dad was, there is no telling!
