Old-Time Shaving...anyone?

I've been using cartridge shavers forever...!
Much like most other things ......I got 'bit by a bug" (so to speak).. to venture into old-time shaving like my dad never taught me....
I just ordered everything (I think), to get started:
-DE (double-edged) Razor
-sampler pack or blades
-Badger-hair shaving brush
-Shave Oil
-Shave Cream

Plenty of good learning sites to help get started. Learning the preparation, the methods, what works, what don't work.

Been using double edge blades for years. IMO it is the only way to go. My main razor is a re-plated Gillette Fatboy. But I have about 5 others that I rotate through

I have been a wet-shaver for probably 8 or 9 years now. I was an early member of BadgerandBlade and spent many an hour there. Great place to learn the craft and a good bunch of guys. I have tried about every razor imaginable and while I still have most of them, I do most of my shaving with the Merkur long handle classic. It just fits me! That coupled with a Feather blade makes for a great shave.

Brushes are what really trip my trigger when it comes to shaving. This is most of the collection, but a few more are sitting in stands on the counter. When you master the double-edge razor and find the blade that works for you, there's no better shave in my opinion. It reduces irritation, and gives a baby butt smooth shave in the process. And, the brushes are so soft & luxurious!
I look forward to shaving every day, and I'm guessing not many guys can say that!



Unfortunately, my love of collecting things in my hobby spilled over into my audio world, where it gets a lot more expensive! While some of the brushes get a little pricey, nothing like audio!!

To chicken to do a double edge (started out those though used them for years ,maybe the newer blades are better ) but I like a Mug and brush .
 
Badger hair is the way to go. Got my brush, Wilkenson razor, and shave cream from Caswell Massey many years ago.

I switch back and forth from an electric razor and a blade every couple years.

I used to love a straight razor shave. Went on anticoagulant therapy, so now I have to use an electric. I still have my grandfather's razor, with a genuine ivory case.
 
:banana: :banana:I love my mug and brush :banana: :banana:, if I'm on the road without it I'll use bar soap rather than a can of shaving cream.

However I do use a 5 blade Gillette Fusion. If someone comes out with a 7 blade razor I'd probably try it :D
 
+1 The Gillette Fusions are king (at least in my experience) With a mug and brush of course . Only time I've had a straight razor Job was my barber
trimming the whitewalls around the ears and side burn/neck areas
 
Never have had the nerve to try it myself, but HAVE had a couple shaves by real, old-timey BARBERS, & Man, oh, Man...I could get REAL used to THAT in just no time atall...
 
I've been wanting one for a full decade now. Every time I think about it, all that happens is I waste hours looking at vintage stuff on ebay, lose a few auctions, and forget about it for a while longer.
 
I have two Gillette FatBoys that I use fairly regularly and several other DE razors I don't use much at all. I think one of FatBoy's I use is the same age I am :D
+1 on the badger brush as well.

I used to cut myself up badly with the high end disposables. IMO the straight edge razors or double edge razors are less prone to cut. The one cool thing about the Fatboy is that you can adjust the cut amount between the blade and the razor from super fine to a course cut.

The Vision is a masterpiece. I have one on a rack on my countertop for artwork if nothing else. They will give the best shave around, but they can get a little scary if you start to open them up! It takes some a little concentration or :yikes:

I can whip that long-handle classic around like a cartridge razor, but I have to take my time with the Vision!!
