old trick of shorting unused inputs on preamp...

The ones I have are resistive. 600 ohm if I remember right? Ive seen home made ones using 1/2 or 1/4 watt resistors soldered to the rca plug.
 
shorted means shorted to ground with no resistance. At least that what it means to me and thats what the US Navy taught me.
However I suppose some resistance will do the job.

What you want is for no noise voltage can build on very low level inputs
