Some old wrestling photos I found at a flea market around 20 years ago. Fana Manos?, Chief White Eagle, Cousin Willie of the famed "Scufflin Hillibillies" tag team, Frankie Cain, Alabama state champion and Scottie Williams.

Just a tad before my time, I grew up with Bruno, Haystack, Chief J and that crew but cool old pics

I'm told my grandfather was a wrestler in the 20s and 30s, but I don't have any photos of him in the ring, just a photo of a painting of him wrestling.

Frankie Cain went on to be a "bad guy" wrestler in the 1970's, a sheik tag team called the "Infernos", The great mephisto, who's move was a "fireball to the face" and Ham Lee looks oriental but was from mexico. Scottie Williams I can't find anything about other than he might have been Scottish.

Those are the guys I grew up watching on All-Star Wrestling. Never got to see a show in person, but they were always at the War Memorial Amphitheater in Peoria, Illinois, near where I grew up. Don't forget Wahoo McDaniels, The Iron Sheik, and Baron Von Raschke!

When I was in college in the 70s, wrestling had slumped a bit in popularity, and was relegated to one of the local Sacramento TV stations to appease the local fans. They filmed the events at the Channel 40 studios in Sac on Thursday nights for weekly airing on Sunday afternoon. There was a rental yard (Abba Dabba Rents) just down the street from where I lived that gave away free tickets to the filming if you got there at 7AM, limit 2 tickets per person. My roommates and I decided to partake in the festivities one day, so we hit the rental yard early enough to snag tickets. We polished off a substantial amount of liquid refreshments and headed for the studio.

We got there a bit early, and they were still setting things up. One of the workers showed us one of the "tricks" used in wrestling mats. The floor of the ring was basically a snare drum, stretched tight over another layer with a gap in between. Anything that hit the mat sounded like it hit ten times harder.

The "regulars" started to show up and bag the front seats, so we decided to sit in the back and root for the "bad guys". Pepper Martin, and ex-wrestler, and Hank Renner were the announcers.

Kinji Shibuya (bad guy), Mr. Moto (bad guy), Ray Stevens (once a bad guy, now a good guy) were there, plus a multitude of others.

All in all we had a blast, except one thing. With all due respects to wrestling (as on TV), there are a certain group of people who believe that it is all 100% real, with no acting or sensationalizing, and are die-hard fans of the "good guys". Those are mostly the folks who, back then, got the rest of the free tickets at Abba Dabba Rents. Needless to say, by rooting for the bad guys, were weren't the most popular folks at the event. We thought it best to vacate the arena before the rest of the fans figured out which cars were ours.

Side note ; After Ray Stevens (The Blonde Bomber, who called his viewers "pencil necks") retired, he lived in Fremont, Ca., and had a ranch not too far from here. One of my customers sold him hay for his horses but never knew who he was until I told him.

Father of an acquaintance was Stanley Radwan (1908-1998), "The Polish Strongman and King of Iron and Steel".

Couple of photos/ads I found:

I saw a similar stunt in Tijuana but it was a Donkey instead of a horse, and a..............nevermind.:D

Anyone remember Gorgeous George who would throw gold hair pins into the audience?

I remember Paul Anderson, the World's Strongest Man, but don't recall if he wrestled.
