Old Zenith console

I've been searching for less expensive insurance and found an agent not far away to look into. Went to my appointment and found this in her office.

She said it works fine except for it needing a new stylus which her son is looking into. The person who sold it to her said the record cabinet and console goes as a set so she got both after only wanting the console. Told her she did well for $50.

The record cabinet is currently used for paperwork.

Look like it's in good condition. I assume it's monophonic because it says "High Fidelity". It would have been labeled Stereo if it were, even though it looks like two woofers and two tweeters. I recall as a kid when Stereo appeared, it was a new thing and was somewhat mysterious to a lot of folks as to 'what is it?'. Will you get a chance to hear i?

I believe that is a 1957 model and mono. It has electrostatic tweeters and 6V6 push pull out put tubes.

I think these models used an Electro-Voice power point cartridge/stylus.

It is in great condition, those blonde finishes are usually in bad condition by now.

You are correct by the way! Great post. The early Stereo models also did as well. Some of the early model Stereo consoles could be bought single channel, and then a second cabinet for Stereo. Beautiful blonde cabinet, by the way! This may be a very early Stereo model and could be from 1958-1959 (as this badging was used in that time). When working well, sounded very nice for it's genre.

We'll be in touch so I'll ask about the new stylus as we go along. She said the radio worked but when I was finished in her office I went to another for other insurance.

This other gal said her dad has vintage gear and taught her what to look for. She knows about the newer black plastic stuff. Said her dad had Klipsch.

Great looking piece of furniture, aesthetically very pleasing to the eye

See if you can see the model # on the back I'd be interested in learning more about this

VM changer. It's mono, I would say. No reference, at all, to stereo and still has the "record compensation" selector which was pretty ,much gone by the stereo era.

Beautiful.

When I was a kid, we had an Emerson console with the same blond finish. It was from the early fifties. It had a very unusual changer in it I have never been able to identify. The "reject" was kind of a plate that you pulled toward you to activate The platter had black flocking on it. The tonearm was narrow until it got to where the cartridge was mounted and then widened with a rounded top.

My dad made a new cabinet for it many years ago (for compactness) as the original was fairly wide. The changer was discarded sometime in the ensuing years but I still have the replacement cabinet with the radio and original speaker in it and it still works.

Sorry for the diversion.

A blonde, tubed, stereo Zenith console is on my short list to add to my small collection. Rare to find a blonde mono in excellent and complete condition. I think many of these had the 12" 49CZ8__ series of speakers prized by many full-range speaker enthusiasts. Thanks for sharing those photos as I wasn't aware of a matching record cabinet.

My son in law has a similar rig which he inherited with turntable missing. Beautiful MCM cabinet. i had the tuner/amp restored. Sounds really nice. His contains those famous CZ49 something or other woofers which I suspect are inside this blond cabinet.
