Omni-Kabuki?

I came across these home built speakers in a thrift store. They were so bizair I had to bring them home. They are fairly well constructed with casters on the bottom. There are a total of 7 drivers. One 8" woofer, two each 5" mids, and a pair each of two different design tweets.

The tweets and mids are aranged to point in different dirrections. Has anyone seen a design like this? Is it unique to this builder or does it represent some sort of omni design school of thought?

Not too bad looking with the cover on them, very strange looking without. Overall weird, especially if they don't sound spectacular.

Cats would probably like it...

I think those are Dr. Suess SoundGrinch 3000's.
:lmao::lmao::lmao:

Someone put a lot of time into making them. Overall they are fairly well executed. The only sketchy bit is the cover. It just sits on it, loose. No Velcro, magnets or other retainers. Sadly the bottom box wasn't strong enough for the casters. The base is broken on both of them. It's made out of 1/2 press board and it's pulling apart.

The crossover's are home made too. I'll try to get a picture.

Does anyone recognize the Motorola tweeters and the Peerless mid tweets?

The drivers look like good stuff, the cabinet looks cool... Why does it sound bad? Perhaps you can tweak the crossover...

Looks like the designer put some effort into physical time-alignment of the drivers, hence the weird shape. Are they mirror imaged? And how are the second set of mid/high drivers connected? Same xover as the other ones?

The Motorola tweeters are piezos, which might be why they don't sound too good...there's a good way and a very bad way to use them!

My take? Use the woofer, one mid and one of the dome Peerless tweeters- make a good 3-way system out of that. Save the other drivers for other projects...

Gordon.

I've seen those before. They're the Aural Ecstasy PB4U-69. Just kiddin'. How do they image? Try out the Chesky Vol.1 test disc on them.

I'll take a closer look at the crossovers. Now that I think about it I didn't check to see if all the drivers are even working. I need to spend more quality time with them. Also my point of reference was the ADS L810s that I disconnected to check the Sound Grinches. They are a tough act to follow.

I played with them a little more this past weekend. They are beginning to grow on me. Up to this point I just had one connected and hadn't given them a real workout. I hooked them both up to a G-9000DB and let 'em rip. They did pretty well, great highs and OK bass. Since they have casters on them, I think I'll use them for patio speakers. The omni design might work pretty good in the back yard.

Here's a picture of the cross over. Someone put some real time into making these things.
