Recently I noticed my stash of Omron MY2-02_DC24 was running low. I went to check on getting some supply at Digikey. It seemed to me that the relay has gone up quite a bit in price over 2 years, though it was in stock at Digikey at least.

In Feb of 2024 I bought 2 Omron MY2-02_DC24 for $11.72 each at Digikey, they are now $16.92 each. Its getting to be enough that it made me think to look for some possible alternatives. There is at least one of these alternatives being discussed on AK previously, PT271024. I will go through a few others in this thread.

Also I think there is a real possibility of another form of relay being adapted with a small pcb to match the footprint of the Omron relay. But then your futzing around with another part, another part is more work, and while good when there is no other option sometimes a drop in part is handy.

All of these relays are similar, and should work in a vintage stereo if you can get them to fit. These are Through Hole, DPDT, 2 Form C, 24 VDC, with similar operating voltages and coil resistance.

First up is TE Connectivity PT271024

Price at Digikey 1=$14.38 / 10 = $12.80
Contact Rating: 12A
Coil Resistance: 777ohm **may require circuit mod
Substance of Contacts: Silver/Nickel
Notes: Low profile, has a manual engagement with locking feature which can be useful when appropriate (don't fry your speakers on a guess), drop in replacementTEConn.jpg
 
Next up is Amphenol AM2C05SCLD02400G

Price at Digikey 1=$6.66 / 10 = $5.93
Contact Rating: 5A
Coil Resistance: 650ohm
Substance of Contacts: Silver/Nickel
Notes: Though it's listed as PC Pins they are more of a mini lug, SHOULD fit perhaps with awl persuasion. Has an orange flag and a green led indicator. Amphenol is well known for quality connectors. They apparently make a lot of relays, may have variants of this or other useful relays.

Coil Resistance: 640ohm
Substance of Contacts: Silver Cadmium Oxide
Notes: Close in appearance to an Omron, drop in replacement

I don't work for digikey and I have no interest in what relays you buy, just sharing some info I found. Perhaps other people have a different solution, if so feel free to post.

I may do a summary in the first post of available options so people can see what is available besides Omron.

This seems to be the winner, but at almost half the cost does leave me wondering what we're losing.

Regardless, I'll probably keep buying the Omron in bulk from the cheapest supplier.
 
I have been thinking about this more. I may offer up an adapter pcb board. It would convert a modern relay to the foot print of an Omron MY2-02-DC24.

Base of an Omron is 28mm by 21mm rectangle. Looking on Digikey for something that would fit and have 24VDC coil voltage, and a resistance of near 660ohms, I found:

American Zettler AZ733W-2AE-24DE



It's DPST, should be fine as on the Omron the normally closed contacts don't do anything. It's 29mm in the long dimension, that's pretty close. Coil resistance of 720ohms, within 10% of the Omron. 12A contacts, Silver Tin alloy. price $2.87 if you buy 10 (purty cheap)

Anybody have an opinion, or a better relay in this small narrow form?

When something is 5x cheaper than the direct replacement, I always ask myself...why? Could be a totally fine replacement with the adapter, but what about the longevity?
 
That's a good question. My first thought was since there is very little need for the old 70s style relay there is not many made and the price goes up greatly for the old style.

If you look at the Zettler there are 2500 in stick at digikey, the omron 150.

If you look at the Delta board that is remade for Pioneer SX-1250, it comes in two options, one that holds an old 70s style relay and one that uses new relays. The manufacturer told me the new style is the better quality relay.

From the datasheet:

That looks like a very long lasting relay, to me. But if I'm wrong I'd like to know. Also the Zettler is fully sealed, operate time 10ms, release 4ms. Everything I see looks better than the Omron, but I'm far from the authority.
