Once you go Black......system update

Thrift-a-holic

Hooked for life
:yes:So when I started down this road of 2 channel audio, I pictured all my gear would always be 70's and silver. Not that I made choice to go away from that, but I have been following where the Karma has lead me. I have a mix of 70's 80's and 90's. If only my Technics Sl-d202 turntable was black......no I am not going to paint it:D That Sl-d202 is what kicked this whole thing off. It was my Dad's and I wish he were here to so how great it sounds.

Top to bottom left to right-

My entire system is 100% black ...............

Sansui UT-7700 tuner
Magnavox CDB460 CD player
B&K Pro 5 pre-amp
B&K ST-140 amp

Didn't plan on that.....just the way it worked out?

Nothing wrong with black....

I'll take my BPC* stack over most silver gear any day.

*Note my BPC is actually anodized aluminum....

I don't care how good they are, you still can not read the markings and labels without a high powered flashlight and a magnifying glass. With my eyes, I'll still stick with silver. :D

Silver is nice and interesting to look at but I prefer all the equipment black, myself. My living room Carver stack is all black and my office Soundcraftsmen stack is all black as well. Don't get me wrong...I like those silver goodies but now they spend more time doing closet duty or being used for decoration on a shelf. I think I've sold off most all of my silver stuff except for a G-9000DB, a Pioneer SX-890 (black dial SX-880) and a Concept 2.5.

I was a silver Pioneer fan. Had all the do-dads, expander, reverb, router, etc. My SA-8800 amp died, so I bought a mint SX-850 receiver. That died 6 months later. I have no electronic repair knowledge so decided to by something new. Sold all the old stuff, and bought an Onkyo TX-8555 receiver (100wpc). That started the Black collection. Now I've got all black Onkyo. The receiver and CD player are new (refurbished units from Onkyo) the cassette is a 1994 TA-R301. TT is mid 80's (I think) also black - CP-1055F. I no longer worry about burning up the amp, or going into "protection" mode. Very reliable, and I've got a warranty now! The music sounds just as good. (I did keep the Pioneer HPM-900's, and they are not offended by being driven by an Onkyo)

I think of all the things to choose in equipment, the color of it is the least important to me.

Right now, I've ended up with mostly a "metal box wrapped in wood" look, but it wasn't intentional, just a lot of tube gear is like that :D

I have thought about a rack. I know it would be nicer. Problem is my listening room is so small, and If I brought in something, something else would need to go. The thing that bugs me the most though, is that i have it by my window. I am afraid I will leave it open one day and the wind might blow some water on my stuff. The only thing that has prevented me from moving it is my spacial constraints. I need to make some kind of flashing (probably not the righ word) to gaurd against water. I could make something out of plastic and make a barrier between my window and the gear. I have some ideas on how to do it, but just haven't done so yet.

When you say isolate the turn table, you mean build a shelf for it correct? Tell me if this is dumb....:D I have some rubber roller skate wheels. They are made of a relativly soft rubber. They feel like a rubber superball. I have placed them under the let pads of the TT, and I feel like it is actually obsorbing some of the shock from vibrations on foot steps and stuff.

Nothing inherently wrong with black. My main system for almost 4 decades has been black, McIntosh black, that is. My other large separates system, Philips Laboratory Series, is also all black.

My main rig equipment is all black except my red Bellari VP129 Phono Preamp. My vintage system is silver, and I really like the look of both.
Regards,
Jim

Very nice looking rack and stack. However, as much as I like the look of black gear from a distance (I have enough of it), I prefer silver face these days. Rapidly dwindling eyesight, you see... Silver face is easier for me to read. Silver face only gets me so far, however. Almost all gear is black on the back; I regularly wear a VERY bright LED headlamp when I am moving gear around and need to work on the backs.

I prefer the look of vintage silver and have quite a bit of it, but my acquisitions depend on timing and price. It has turned out that my two best systems are black, Sansui integrated-tuner and Yamaha separates. I just take it as it comes my way.
