One Receiver - Switch between pairs of speakers.

Hi all,

I currently run an Outlaw 2160MKII receiver and a pair of Tannoy SRM-10b - accompanied by an SVS sub as my vinyl lustening station.

I have a pair of Sansui XP-8, a pair of KEF LS50 Meta, and some Technics towers piling up in the closet; a big variation as you can see. I’d like to set up these multiple pairs of speakers (and more down the road) in the same listening space and switch between them, sort of like a showroom but just for me. :)

I am not interested in attempting to play multiple pairs at the same time.

A few questions I’m trying to wrap my head around…

- Is it as simple as grabbing something like the Russound SDB 6.1 speaker selector, connecting my receiver’s L/R out to the Amp In, and the each pair of speaker off of that?
- Anything else to be aware of? Or do? Or not do?

Yup.
A speaker selector switch will do the trick. Best not to run more than one pair at a time. I have a small Niles swithbox with a protection button that can be used to be sure it doesn't run below certain level and damage the amp. Works fine.

This idea of “damaging” the amp - I’ve see it talked about…. If I have already chosen speakers that my amp can handle, and I’m only listening to one pair at a time, how does the damage happen?

It seems the Niles and Russound are pretty similar in practice? Ideally I’m looking for something that will handle 4+ pairs of speakers.

After doing some more digging I’m seeing recommendations for the old Adcoms. I see quite a few GFS-6 on eBay. They seem to be “straight thru” types that just switch.

I also see this Luxman AS-55. Although 10x plus the price of a used Adcom, I do like that it’s an actual “switch”, not a toggle button, so you are unable to accidentally have 2 pairs of speakers going at once. I wish it could handle more speaker pairs though.
 
Depending on the arrangement multiple pairs of speakers stacked in the room could have a significant negative affect on imaging/soundstage if that's something important to your listening experience.

Added to this it's likely more than one pair will want to occupy the same space to sound their best.

Have any of you found a speaker selector box that will handle four or more pairs of speakers, has quality connectors for the speaker wire, and does not decrease the volume or distort the signal? I have tried three or four different brands and none are adequate. Most are designed to control...

As long as you don't drop below the ohms your amp can handle, and all the wires are neat and don't cross, you'll be fine. But accidents do happen, and bad things happen fast. Just sayin'.

Do people a banana plug "patch panel" approach whereby instead of a switch its just plugging cables in and out of a panel of plugs, type of thing?
