The short:
My new-to-me tube amp, integrated Onix SP3 37W sounds better with my B&W 801 speakers than two MC-7270 540w in bridged mono setup
The long:
Back in a day my only exposure to tubes was a Bellari Phono stage and a Yaqin MC-13 - I liked it, but honestly I didn't really care that much for the heat - and with kids on the way, ADCOM 545 was a much better choice
Now fast forward few years where I scored a mint pair of B&W 801s (original from 1985). To no surprise of mine, the trusty HK-930 was struggling to power my "new" speakers (86dB and with endless power needs) I ended up splurging on a MC-7270 which was quickly followed by a second MC-7270 to run in bridged mono.
Super happy, perfect combo and 540watts per speakers - yay! future proof setup.
Alright, so last week I see a Onix SP3 on local craigslist (major case of memory lane trip back from when I trusted Mark Shifty and his AV123 with my cash in late 2000s)
I took it home and for shits plugged my 801s into it - this amp is rated at 37wpc, I expected literally nothing - but WOW, way more than enough volume and I'm either super confused/biased (pun un-intented) but the bass actually sound better than with bridged 2 MC-7270.
The question:
So what is happening here ??? We are talking MC-7270 with 540W against 37W on the Onix Tube Amp.
