Onkyo 1055F or Pioneer PL-600

It immediately blew out of the water all the other TTs I have....

Well...I admit I'm quite new into turntables, but it's the best TT I ever heard! At first it didn't even seem real...Are those my records, is this my cartridge I was so used to? This is the way they sound? I was just listening to a record and I was thinking is there any better?..
I may sound like I'm overreacting, but I'm just impressed.
Power and clarity, and a sense of immediateness.

Sounds like it's a good mate for your Ortofon. How did you align your cartridge? Did it come with the original protractor or did you download it from vinylengine?
 
I download it from vinylengine. The alignment was a little painful, as I was used to belt-drives that have that lever for lowering the tonearm. With this one I have to manually put the stylus on the protractor while aligning it, which makes you kind of sweat...
Anyway, maybe it is a good match for the Ortofon but I'm sure that by upgrading the cartridge on this TT the sound upgrade would be significant, that is way I'm planning to go to an MC cartridge.
So I'm pondering over the HO Denon DL 160 or the LO Denon DL-103....or something around $300...Any advices here? I'm using the Project PhonoBox as preamp.

The DL-103 is a very low compliance cartridge (very stiff cantilever) which is not a good match to the low mass arm. The DL-160 would be more preferable. You want to look at higher compliance cartridges (lower tracking forces). The DL-103 would have mated well with the PL-600.

For a while I used my DL-160 on the 1057 tonearm and was pleased with the combination. It doesn't hurt that the noise floor is so low with the 1057 while using a medium output HOMC either.
I've never heard or tried any of the new Ortofon's, but compared to the previous OM-20 that came on my 1057 the DL-160 was a significant upgrade. Much more refined and articulate, but also somewhat more laid-back sounding.

I bought my DL-160 from Yogi and got great service. Does the ProJect phonobox have low output MC capability? You'd need a step-up transformer for the DL-301 or DL-103 if not.

I'd agree with Jim on the DL-301MKII. Another one to consider would be the AT-OC9MLII:

Earl, I admit I'm crazy about it :)

Forgot to tell you that I received the Jico stylus on Thursday. All I can say is...: you were absolutely right, in every way ! And thank you for that ! ;)
