Onkyo A-9010 Digital Input issues

I have an Onkyo A-9010 integrated amplifier(non-UK model with digital inputs) and it's worked well for the ~2 years I've had it. Recently, the digital inputs(both Coaxial and Optical from different sources) stopped working correctly. If I turn the volume up to 100%, then I can hear the audio feebly. The headphone output(from digital source) works correctly at all volumes. Analog inputs also work as expected.

I took a quick look inside and couldn't immediately spot any blown capacitors. It's out of warranty and I do not have a service centre here that I can use(this was an imported unit).

Any idea what could be wrong and how I could go about diagnosing this? I'm happy to post pictures if required and I'm also pretty handy with a soldering iron.

First download the service manual!!
You can find it on electrotanya web site!

On page 9 at service manual you can see the digital input section!
For it to work you need a +5v and +3,3v power supply!
so first you have to check pin 2 on ic242 for +5v and pin 2 on ic241 for 3.3v!
Check also on side of r2411 for 12v (or pin 1 and 3(gnd) of ic242)
if you haven't 3.3 or 5 volt you may check c2411 or c2421 (100uf/16v) for sort/bad!

Also check if you have 24v between pin 8 and pin 4 on ic261!
Be carefull with you probes not to slιp and make more problems!!

Did you try a factory reset/restore defaults?

To return to the default setting When this unit is not operating properly, it may return to normal condition by returning the condition to default setting in following procedure. While the unit is on, press and hold the DIRECT button and press the Í ON/STANDBY button. All the LEDs will go off and the unit will turn into standby mode after approximately 5 seconds later, and the condition will return to default setting.

Based on very quick review it appears the digital section should be common for both headphone and speaker output, so maybe not the digital input section itself if it works with the headphones?

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I tried that when I first came across the service manual, that did not seem to have an effect.

If it did not work with the headphones, I'd have attributed it to an issue with the digital daughter board. Since I can also hear the audio output(albeit when the volume is turned up), the DAC etc. also work fine. It *seems* like an amplification issue, so perhaps the issue lies between the DAC -> Power Amplifier? My audio electronics knowledge isn't sufficient to diagnose beyond this.

Another point, in case it proves useful: The digital input LEDs usually used to blink when there's was no input signal. Now, they keep blinking(even when I can hear the faint audio with the volume turned up). Not sure if that's something that can be read into.

Thank you Kraumaster, very ilustrative.
In my case, I think the digital board works fine, because it provide sound to headphones correctly, but thorgh speakers the sound is very low.
Ive been cheking the schematic and maybe the issue is in the MCU board so I will have to desarm all frontal panel to get in.
Added a photo where I think the problem is.
