Technics had flat driver speakers in the 1980s as well, with lightweight 'honeycomb' drivers. In addition to the several drivers being inherently phase aligned, there was supposedly benefit in simplified crossover design due to that linear phasing and elimination of the 'cavity effect'.

Those were interesting times! Yeah these Sony APMs are flat also, forgot to mention that, and they did have sort of a honeycomb appearance. I have a boombox (Sony's first CD boombox, in fact) and after stuffing the ports with foam to block them off, the speakers actually don't sound too bad now. The CD and cassette player died sometime in the past century, but I use it in the garage with an old phone or a Chromecast Audio tethered to it. Plenty loud enough!

I remember those from when they came out, and had been scouring Google lately to see if they existed in the real world (I never saw them in person, just in the brochure). No idea if they're worth the asking price, but they're probably at least halfway decent. There were a lot of gimmicky speakers in the 1980s.

I thought they were just different enough to be interesting. Quality? Who knows? Onkyo seems to cover both ends of the spectrum with speakers... either absolute crap, or extremely high quality. Hard to tell not seeing/hearing these in person.

They’re quite good. I heard a pair in Selinsgrove PA in the mid 80’s driven by the m4 amp and c? Yamaha combo.
