Onkyo guys come forth

since i"ve been on my huge freakin meter mission it has come to my attention that there are just to many of these big metered onkyo"s to keep up with. Why are there so many ( M models ) and there dosnt seem to be much difference. So far, m504, m506, m508, m510, m5060, m5030. They all look pretty much the same, and i"m sure i missed some. I know the wpc is different but jeez where the hell have I been. I am now thinking what I need to do is just find the cleanest one I can and not be to concerned about wpc, their all strong on the power end. It also seems like if you keep up with it you can find a good deal on the bay, price is all over the place. Another question I have is will I have to find a pre to be able to play cd"s, i"ve never owned just an outright power amp before just a buttload of receivers. Any advise is appreciated, thanks, Roost

Got a M-504....After a Recap the sound has opened up. Stock was Muddy to me.

The M-504 is "Eye Candy"...My main Amp is a Luxman M-120A and Sony TA-N9000ES.

Good luck to you in finding a big metered onkyo. I have a 508 and it's one of the best sounding and looking amps that I've owned over the years. Currently mine plays 2nd fiddle only to my mac mc 2500.
You could use the gain adjustments on a power amp as temporary solution to play cd's but using a pre is a better choice.

They may look the same but they certainly aren't the same inside ;). For instance, for M510 you'll need a crane to get it into your apartment as it weighs around 140 lbs, with 300 W/channel into 8 ohms (it puts out more IMO). While its little brother M504 is around 49,5 lbs.

I've been collecting Onkyo for years. I have (4)M504's, (3) M501's, a couple of P-301's, and some 2 channel stuff. I also have tuner's, CDP's, CTP's, EQ's, and speakers. All Onkyo. This stuff is built like tanks. Used and Abused, but still tickin'.

What I don't have is a PRE that'll do HT duty. I can't afford new, so anybody got any ideas on an older model that will do 7.1? I would also entertain a 5.1, as long as it does DD and DTS. Not too worried about HDMI either.

What should I be looking for?

Thanks

guys I won an m-5030 on the bay for 235. from looking at the 30 or so pics seller sent it sure is clean, meters work fine, meter lights up good. i cant wait to get this puppy in, now I need to find a pre, would like to find one of the integra"s so they will match. Any suggestions ? thanks, Roost

I am the lucky owner of a TX8500 mkII....................one of THE best. Astounding performer! 25kgs of dual mono bliss.

The P-3030 is the matching preamp. If you do that try to dig up the super servo cable with it as well.

I must say Im very happy with my M-504's( have 3) ...Im looking into finding a 508..the meters are really cool!...and yes you can still work the pre amp without the superservo cable.

M-5090. 70 lbs of heaven. 3/8 in. tempered glass covering some very large meters. Sold it to a friend.

I think the "Super Servo" cable was intended to be a feedback loop designed to minimize distortion in the amplifier speaker connection. but most dont have them anymore..or simply dont use them!

Integra 9.8, 9.9, or 80.X series?

Integra 9.8, 9.9, or 80.X series?

I've been looking at those. Thanks for the conformation, but with the renovations around the place, new furniture, kitchen, bath, and an assortment of other exspences, I'M BROKE :sigh:

Any of those are on my wish list, but for right now what can I get that has a good phono stage and pre-outs that can do basic HT duty? My vinyl is first, everything else is second. I don't want crap, but I've got about $400 stached away for this (don't tell the wife). Maybe something in an all-in-one HT unit? Something I could use later on for the bedroom, or a small HT for the basement.

I'm really out of touch with the newer stuff, so this is why I'm here. Plus, I don't have time to breath, let alone sit down at the computer doing research. From work at work, to work at home. I know it'll be worth it in the end, but it's going to be a while to afford what I really want. I'm not opposed to used either.

I know you guys will come up with something. Thanks

looked it up, 200 wpc, dang, one sold on ebay for 550, looks really nice, love the big meters. So my big meter onkyo list is as follows...m-504/m-506/m-508/m-510/m-5030/m-5060/m-5090....seems onkyo is king of the big meters, other than Mac I dont think anybody makes that many. They all look awesome, I really like the ones with green lights, just different I guess.....Roost

I have the m-506rs w/ p-306rs pre plus their servo cable from a local classified ad earlier this summer. I had to have them worked on but the sound is really, really good. I think they would make a superb base for a HT system. Right now, I have 2 systems, one for music and a kind of wimpy one for home theatre. I have seriously been considering making 1 system for both and that amp would definitely anchor that system!
