I did recently got a Onkyo TX-8050 stereo receiver and it says it's rated for 4 ohms to 16 ohms but is this receiver really a 4 ohms receiver? I did connect my JBL 4312M speakers and they seem to work fine when I select 4 ohms in hardware. There was 4 and 6 ohms selection. Each time I change it it makes a click sound so I thought maybe it's just a switch inside that changes it from 4 ohms to 6 ohms. Also seems like if I had 8 ohms speakers then I should set it to 6 ohms since there is no 8 ohms as a choice.

Generally speaking, the danger is in using speakers if the nominal impedance falls BELOW the impedance spec on the amp. The 4312's are 8 ohm, so you could use whichever setting sounds better to you.
I'm not sure flipping that switch on the fly with the receiver turned on is a good idea though...

PS ... there is a note on another page that says you should not connect more than one pair of 4ohm speakers ... Also, if you connect two pairs of 8ohm speakers, you should set the receiver to 4ohm. As far as on the fly switching goes, not an issue. Worst that could happen is the internal protection could get confused resulting in no sound. That should reset with a quick power cycle.

Also I read somewhere that someone said even the speakers are 4 ohms it should be set to 8 ohms well for me it's 6 ohms since then it will give the full power and better sound or something like that I can't remember. But should I set the receiver to 4 ohms or 6 ohms is the question. I assume 4 ohms since my speakers are 4 ohms as the specs say. But maybe the newer receivers like mine is different and 4 ohms settings work the best for 4 ohms speakers.

Or is this receiver different from like some Kenwood receivers that have a switch. I know some of there receivers have a switch that says less than 8 ohms and 8 ohms or more. But the Onkyo I have has a 4 ohms and 8 ohms selection on the screen.
