Onkyo TX-830 issues

My son picked up an Onkyo TX-830 free for me. It doesn’t seem to have consistent sound between channels. I have yet to CRC it. Someone cut a whole in the bottom, I’m pretty sure it’s not factory. Also a freeway capacitors look toasted. What do you all think?

Thanks,
Perry

I think the caps were glued in place at the factory and although some may be tired they don't look bad to me. No bulging tops, can't see if the bottoms are leaking but that glue is not a problem unless it is on the leads and is corrosive after all these year.

OK, good to know. I sprayed CRC in all the pots. I’ll try it again and see.

Thanks,
Perry

Worked on it a bit tonight. Intermittent sound on left side. Will CRC volume and balance pots Again. Everything else seems fine.

Work on the Balance Pot (and use DeOxit Fader Lube) and then clean the switches/contacts for the Tape Loops... old Onkyo stuff used to run everything through the tape loops and when the Tape switches get dirty it causes channels to drop out (My older TX-4500MKII has issues with the Tape 2 switch and I have to push the button in/out 10-15 times to clear it up- been this way for 15 years)

FWIW, it looks like somebody used a dremel to cut out the bottom so they could change a capacitor without having to remove the whole circuit board - look at the non-factory soldering I've highlighted, it could use a touch up.

Krautmaster, thanks for the info and help on that repair. I’ll have to take a look. That could be part of the issue.

Been a while, but an update. I got the top cover off the speaker relay. When I turn it on, it makes the clicks. And I see the contacts move. Trouble is right channel is intermittent yet. I tap on the contacts and they work. I wonder if I desolder it and give it a good cleaning will that help? Do these ever just quit? It's in the lower left. I see why people cut open the bottom of these. It's the only way to get at anything.

Thanks,
Perry

I just picked up a TX-830 cheap yesterday- owner said he couldn't get any sound out of it. I got it as a project, as practice before diving into a restoration of a 1970's Kenwood. I haven't powered it up yet, took the cover off and found a burn/soot mark in the middle of the cover, directly above the four resisters in your picture. The board around those resistors is discolored, looks like heat damage. I can see why they cut a hole in the bottom but I'm going to try removing the main board.

At least the previous owner did a clean job making an access hole. That brown around the bottom of the big capacitors is definitely factory glue.IMG_4297.jpeg

How'd it go with removing the main board? My Onkyo TX-830 has had the issue of channels with no sound until I crank the volume up, so most likely the speaker relay. And, yup, it looks like a serious chore to access the bottom of the board. I also popped the top off the relay and tried cleaning it with paper strips and some alcohol, but no love. So next to see if I can relpace it, but not looking forward to taking it all apart to access the bottom of the board.

Sorry for the slow response, havent been on in a while. I've not gotten back to the Onkyo yet. Worked on some other items first. I plan on trying to clean the speaker relay first also.
