Onkyo TX-85 stopped working!

I have an Onkyo TX-85 with no sound. I heard a pop and no sound. I took it to an authorized Onkyo repair facility and they replace two NEC UPD 6360C chips, but still no sound. They gave up. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

1. Did you get this not working or did it work at one time then stop?
2. When you turn it on, do you hear a click about 5 seconds after you turn it on?

What is the display when turned on? The chip they changed is for switching the inputs and is controlled by the CPU chip which is probably NLA (UPD 1712) ... but a very common problem is the Crystal which clocks the chip goes bad, and everything locks up (but relay clicks). 4.5mHZ crystal X-801.

Did the repair facility actually do some diagnosis, or just replace the chips blindly?
They did a diagnostic and noticed some anomalies before replacing the chips e.g. voltage etc. The anomalies went away but still no sound. He gave up at that point. FYI the repair facility is a certified Onkyo reapir facility.

I had this unit for 40 years with no issues until that day. Turned the unit on and heard a pop and no sound. I don't recall a click just a pop and it was fairly soon after I powered up come to think about it.

If the switching ICs were really bad, the unit was probably subjected to a powerline surge and many semiconductors were damaged. That would explain why they "gave up." Not worth repairing.
