Oooh, Nextdoor “free old speakers”. Mystery unfolds

The LS-8 is one of my favorite 8" extended range drivers. Period.
The T-35/T-35B/TW-35 is a bit of an acquired taste, from my perspective (at any rate).

These little loudspeakers will be at their best with a very good quality, low-ish powered vacuum amplifier.
Single-ended 2A3 would be very nice.
I can imagine that horn could be grating. Although I bet there's some Keith Richards solos that sound out of sight.

I did just find a Heathkit w-3am. Perhaps too much juice plus I'll need another. Pair of Pathfinder PAs. 6a6 outputs I think, not high quality.

I think the Baronet enclosure predated the LS-8. The latter was introduced ca. 1960 or 61 (I think)

The T-35/T-35B/TW-35 is a bit of an acquired taste, from my perspective (at any rate).

Anyone who acquires that taste clearly needs an audio intervention. The difference between a modern soft-dome and the Electro-Voice T-35 is much like the difference between drinking a fifty year old whiskey in a hand-blown glass and eating sterno with a plastic spoon right out of the container while stabbing your eardrums with a pencil.*

Ok, hyperbole aside, using a Zobel to tame the impedance rise above about 9k to 10k Hz, where it becomes spikey and spitty, the T-35 is likely about as good as any other 1960s compression-horn tweeter. Which is to say, if you like the handling of cars with tail fins and plate-glass windows, enjoy the stairs in a sunken living room, and get all mushy inside when you see a pink tile bathroom, well, it might be perfect for you.

A better option might be to cross to a soft dome at about 8k to 9k Hz and avoid the nasty HF distortion your mamma warned you about. A first-order band-pass filter for the T-35 and supertweeter (inductor-capacitor for the T-35 and a capacitor or inductor-capacitor for the supertweeter) won't be audible since it is high up. That way one preserves the original sound and gets extended range, all without the regrettable distortion of the original because this was the best anyone was able to do at the time. We now have superior options.

* Caution: Hyperbole is not to be seriously or internally taken. Use only as directed. As your doctor if Hyperbole is right for you. If you are humor impaired do not use Hyperbole as it may aggravate certain conditions. Do not combine Hyperbole with Sarcasm, Irony, or Snark as these may intensify the effects.

Yeah was thinking about that while walking the dog this morning. Of course all that comes after I actually test for function.

Any idea what the crossover frequency or the cap value is?
Got a pair of the LS-8's around here somewhere and would like to put them to good use, maybe in an Open Baffle project.

Hey
I bought these years ago. With some "davis brand" speakers in them. I replaced them with some kind of Jenson speaker. I use them in a small office with a kenwood amp tuner and elac 10f (fisher) turntable. If I remember correctly there is some Asian stamps inside of mine. Eric

Cool. Japanese folded horn of the same design maybe? Grill looks like it attaches with magnets, that's nifty.

More little corner cabs come out of the shadows.

Haven't opened up the crossover nor looked for schematic.

I'll post when found.

Yeah the tops look like Philippine mahogany, but also bleached to make it less red.
Most of the 50s-60s residential "mahogany" I come across is Philippine, right? At least I call them that. Meranti more specifically? I guess any mass produced ply wouldn't contain an Americas mahogany.

Bleaching makes sense. Given that, care to throw your opinion into the finish options? Love not to do another red/brown speaker.

I vote for Satin or Semi Gloss clear lacquer. Maybe for or five coats.
Satin yes. I could spray WB lacquer but hand applied oil has been been my go to. Just takes more days but less setup/breakdown hassle.

Thinking about prep and stain options. Even out and better match the tone of the panels. Clear might show blotches etc.

My moms 56 Eichler home that they bought in 58 had Philippine mahogany panel throughout the house as well as the doors. Just the bedrooms and bathrooms where sheetrock. So yeah it was used a lot though the 50s and 60s.

You grew up in an Eichler? Parents architecturally minded or just a house that fit the times? My mom's current MCM house is very similar to the Eichler concept and too is paneled but in a eucalyptus type veneer.

My parent's 20s Spanish Revival had all it's poor mahogany trim painted over save the front door. Perhaps that wood was the Caribbean or Central American variety.

If anyone reads this sh*t or really cares; Joseph Eichler was a mid-century real estate developer in California. He tried to make modern form and function available to the middle class.

Yes the house I grew up in is a Eichler neighborhood and I live about three blocks away from that house now in another one. My moms house I like better than the one I'm in here and she had better windows than a lot of them around here being floor to celling, she also had a all mahogany interior that a lot f them don't. We did a little fix up after she died so I looked up the address for photos and there are some the staging, real estate took below.

Disregard the current price as that's a todays price, these homes where always considered starter homes to raise a family.
