I can imagine that horn could be grating. Although I bet there's some Keith Richards solos that sound out of sight. The LS-8 is one of my favorite 8" extended range drivers. Period.
The T-35/T-35B/TW-35 is a bit of an acquired taste, from my perspective (at any rate).
These little loudspeakers will be at their best with a very good quality, low-ish powered vacuum amplifier.
Single-ended 2A3 would be very nice.

Yeah was thinking about that while walking the dog this morning. Of course all that comes after I actually test for function.A better option might be to cross to a soft dome at about 8k to 9k Hz and avoid the nasty HF distortion your mamma warned you about. A first-order band-pass filter for the T-35 and supertweeter (inductor-capacitor for the T-35 and a capacitor or inductor-capacitor for the supertweeter) won't be audible since it is high up. That way one preserves the original sound and gets extended range, all without the regrettable distortion of the original because this was the best anyone was able to do at the time. We now have superior options.
Yeah the tops look like Philippine mahogany, but also bleached to make it less red.Into refinishing. Last pic show the only bit of edge damage. Overall straight cabs.
@4-2-7 care to jump in with a wood ID? I'm saying Honduran Mahogany.

Cool. Japanese folded horn of the same design maybe? Grill looks like it attaches with magnets, that's nifty.Hey
I bought these years ago. With some "davis brand" speakers in them. I replaced them with some kind of Jenson speaker. I use them in a small office with a kenwood amp tuner and elac 10f (fisher) turntable. If I remember correctly there is some Asian stamps inside of mine. Eric
Haven't opened up the crossover nor looked for schematic.Any idea what the crossover frequency or the cap value is?
Got a pair of the LS-8's around here somewhere and would like to put them to good use, maybe in an Open Baffle project.
Most of the 50s-60s residential "mahogany" I come across is Philippine, right? At least I call them that. Meranti more specifically? I guess any mass produced ply wouldn't contain an Americas mahogany.Yeah the tops look like Philippine mahogany, but also bleached to make it less red.
Given that, care to throw your opinion into the finish options? Love not to do another red/brown speaker.
Satin yes. I could spray WB lacquer but hand applied oil has been been my go to. Just takes more days but less setup/breakdown hassle.I vote for Satin or Semi Gloss clear lacquer. Maybe for or five coats.
My moms 56 Eichler home that they bought in 58 had Philippine mahogany panel throughout the house as well as the doors. Just the bedrooms and bathrooms where sheetrock. So yeah it was used a lot though the 50s and 60s.Most of the 50s-60s residential "mahogany" I come across is Philippine, right?
You grew up in an Eichler? Parents architecturally minded or just a house that fit the times? My mom's current MCM house is very similar to the Eichler concept and too is paneled but in a eucalyptus type veneer. My moms 56 Eichler home that they bought in 58 had Philippine mahogany panel throughout the house as well as the doors. Yes the house I grew up in is a Eichler neighborhood and I live about three blocks away from that house now in another one. My moms house I like better than the one I'm in here and she had better windows than a lot of them around here being floor to celling, she also had a all mahogany interior that a lot f them don't. We did a little fix up after she died so I looked up the address for photos and there are some the staging, real estate took below. You grew up in an Eichler?
