Open baffle from box speakers

Why should I not make Open baffle from box speakers?

I want an open airy sound for vocal jazz music.

Could i take a pair of my polk audio floor speakers and make them open baffle?

maybe even my Heresy 1 and remove the back and sides?

thoughts please

Not all woofers work in an open baffle configuration. In fact, most woofers designed to work in boxes don't work in open baffle as far as I know because the Qts number is too low.

The usual practice in OB is to use one driver that covers as much of the full-range as possible in "di-pole mode". e.g. A "full range" speaker that can radiate equally back and front. The usual practice with closed box speakers is to use drivers that excel at a limited range such as "woofer from 40 to 400" a midrange from 400 to 5000 and a tweeter to cover 5000 to 20000. So, taking the back off will only limit the LF range and the cabinet might be too deep for any good "dipole action."

Far easier to just get a 2 x 4 slab of plywood and buy a "full range" driver which can be as cheap as $150 and mount it on the plywood baffle.
