Open baffle subwoofer

What are your experiences with an open baffle subwoofer?

I have my Zenith 49cz852's as some of you may have seen on my last threads, and instead of buying a 15" woofer to compliment the bass, I would like to use my Tymphany NE225w-08 8" subwoofer since they sound stellar.

My question is is will I run into excursion issues or other technical difficulties? they have a +/- 7.7mm Xmax. I used them in my last build and they just sound fantastic and I think they'd compliment the Zeniths very well.

If and only if they would run into excursion issues I would probably put them in a vented enclosure in a downward firing position. It all depends.

Thought anyone?

We understand you like to do things upside down. You will be better off with a powered sub with a 200 watt plate amp, with it's own 24 db per octave crossover. Cool is nice but I prefer real function. You only want to reproduce signals from 60 to 70 hz down cleanly.

Yes they would have their own plate amp. They have 180 watt RMS handling and Im just wondering if they would have excursion problems.
I woud prefer to use them because...well...I already own them!
and they sound fantastic

They sound fantastic in reference to what! Please find a local AKer with a good system that you can spend some time with. I doubt if you have ever heard a well defind bass note.

Open Baffle Subs require both a large surface area and a high qts.. They also require some distance from boundaries, that is, walls. You'll find information at Martin King's site:

Good luck.

I think you will only have excursion issues if you drive it too hard. Try it, sounds like an inexpensive experiment.

You do have interesting ideas, and obviously think outside the box. (Pun intended)

If you get near Tiffin, OH give me a holler and you can listen to my 15" woofers. :)

Do you want to try providing a valid argument that does NOT rely on an assumption?

what woofers do you have?

In reference to my friend Erwin's system.

He has a homemade CD player with a tube amp preamp, multiple homemade, finely tuned tube amplifiers. The cable for his speaker has been cryotrated to align the molecules(which has a noticeable difference)

I stopped reading here. Do you want to learn about science and fact, or do you want to speak about voodoo? If you want to talk about voodoo, there is a special forum for that.

I really doubt (but just a guess), if he is talking about cables, that he understand what hifi actually is. Which is ok.

Lots of high end gear sounds. As in, its not "flat", but sounded so audiophile people like the "air", the "revealing", the "black", the body. Its all .... Fuel magnets and chrome exhaust tips.

Why don't you build your OBs first, then wory about sub? And no, you don't need an OB sub. Infinity baffle? Yes, if you have the room. But then you could build a bass horn.

Tube amp and subwoofer. It simply doesn't make sense man. I understand some people like tube distortion. Its cool, I like dreamy movies too. It certainly isn't "hifi".

Wow! I set out only to watch what you recommended just to see what it was all about, but ended up watching that whole video. Very interesting! Thanks for posting it.

Whether or not you like tubes or not is your opinion, and guess what? theres a separate thread for that. I don't know what tube amps you have listened to but the ones I listened to sound incredible. It adds texture to sound in a good way. What erwin has taught me is that you shouldn't listen to anyone else. Just try it, and if it sounds better to you then do it. No one over the internet can tell you how your system sounds.

Also, Erwin does not care about Hi-fi myths. He simply changes a part of his system (cables, amps, power transformer on the amp, tweeters etc...) and has him and his two sons listen to it and IF and ONLY IF they all agree that it sounds better than before will they keep the change.

Wow thanks for the actually helpful advice. Im having trouble finding that on this thread.

And thank you spherical cow for some more helpful advice. It seems most people on this thread know better than me how my system sounds, and even how my little 8" Tymphany subwoofers sound. Funny how that works....

That is ok. If you like that and want that - all the power to you!

If you can, I don't know how old you are, but try to get a mini job at a sound studio. That is what I did. Best way to learn and separate actual audio engineering from make believe fairy tale stories.

See, I understand that you are arguing about what you feel is the best audio ever. I really do. And I love when people get exited and hyped over "stuff". But you started out claiming your new no baffle system if "better than 250K" systems. Better basically than any sound studio.

You have a lot to learn my friend. And its a fun FUN journey.

Where in Germany is this referenz system? I'd come and visit you guys.

Well it isn't my system, its Erwins system. He compared it to a quarter of a million dollar pair speakers and he says they're right up there with em. My system should be similar to his, Not exact, but similar. Im also gonna build a marantz Model 8 tube amp replica...

Did you listen to the first 15 minutes of the video? Poppy Crums intro?
not yet I'm at work and am finishing up my homework. Im a receptionist and I have lots of free time to do whatever I want, especially today since were slow for the holiday.

I also may take audio engineering courses at my college next semester.

And as my buddy Erwin always says "garbage in, garbage out"
