Openning KLH model six

Hi to all audio enthousiast. I just bought a pair of speakers KLH model 6, because these were recommended here on AK. But i am not really happy with the sound, i'm sure there is something wrong, it can't be that bad. I would like to check the woofer, and the capacitors. But can't find out how to open the box. I tried a bit to remove the front cover, gently, with a tool. I don't dare forcing too much. Cant figure how that box is built. Anyone experienced to open one model 6?

The 6's of that era are commonly known to have "Tweeter not working" issues which a vast majority of the time is that the cap has gone bad.

If yours are the early model here (see link below) is a definitive way of accessing the tweeters, the woofer is built into the baffle so you won't be able to remove it.

If yours are later models the grill cover will pry out using some TLC, you could try a device like this or a putty blade to gently pry them off as they are attached by velcro

I had some KLH 17's a number of years ago, that when I got them did not sound good. A recap was all they needed and sounded great. a recap should help

Along with the caps there is a lot of info here at AK about resealing the woofers to get proper bass response.
There are 2 places to get the proper sealer,ebay from a seller called vintage_ar and a member here,I think his name is Roy C.

didn't got much time lately, too much projects. But i will surely try to work on these eventually. I just put it aside when i saw the nature of the chalenge. I will post pictures when i decide to attack it. Thanks all for your reply

Don’t give up on these speakers. They are admired by many people on this forum. They are not difficult to put back into good working order. Please post pictures of the back of your speakers. This will help us determine which version you have. You have found a place where many enthusiasts are willing to share their experiences to make them sing again. If English is not your first language that’s ok with us. This is a very international community.

The Six is one of the best vintage two way speakers ever produced IMHO. There’s a reason they’re iconic and loved by so many. I’ve restored many, well worth the time and small investment in parts. As requested, please post pics when you can. Regarding grill removal, you need to unscrew the KLH badge first. Then use a paint can opener to reach around and under the frame and gently pry it up a little bit at a time. This is if yours are removable, and not glued to the front baffle like the very early models. Do some research on the web, look at lots of pics of the variations.

You have to determine whether or not they are the early version or later. Can you post a picture of back? If the backplate is set in, they are likely later, if flat, earlier. I did a restoration thread on a pair I originally bought in 1975 and still use them today. Mine were the later version with the removable grills and access through the front. To get to the crossover on the old ones, you have to access through the back - much more of a pain, but doable.

Then mines are not removables, i have 36899 and 011629a

Well it look like, if you're up for it, you'll have to access the tweeter cap via the back.
