Opinions on Speakers

Any opinions in these speakers for my main set. I'm shopping the local classifieds.

JBL L56?

Advent Heritage?

Infinity RS 5b?

Realistic Mach One?

I am running a Kenwood turntable through a 37 W Pioneer integrated amp. I mostly listen to rock, but some softer stuff and jazz. I know listening is subjective but some feedback would be great.

Everyone's ears are different. You must listen to any speaker you are considering before buying. As for me, I'd keep looking...
 
I've never heard the Infinity's but have owned the other three. Of those, the Advent Heritage are the only ones I still have and use. That being said, unless they are in excellent shape and have refoamed woofers, $200 is a bit high. If they are in good shape but not refoamed, I would think $80-100 would be as high as I would go. They are a fairly easy speaker to refoam.

Keep in mind that this opinion is based on 50+ year old ears with tinnitus so your results may vary. If none of these speakers end up working for you, with patience you can find some fairly amazing speakers for $200.

So, by your signature I take it you have bought these speakers?
Something to consider is your local pawn shop. I've seen some
pretty high end speakers in some of them. Be willing to take
a drive and get to some different ones. You might be surprised.

yah what he said!bring cash and don't go home to think about it cause when your thinking somebody else is buying.
 
came very close to buying the Heritage when they were still current. they have smooth sound that is not tremendously detailed and imaging is average but acceptable. bass was very good imo.
 
You asked :-) Frankly I wouldn't buy ANY of the listed speakers. I'd consider passable Headphones... before those.
Save up 'a nother 200$ Yesss you can wait :-)
Then move up into Speaker price range with a proven pedigree.
It will be a major step up from those.

So, needless to say, I can only offer my opinion (but in this particular thread, that's all that's asked).

None of that list would be pair of loudspeakers there that I'd care to live with as part of a primary system for listening -- tonally the Advents would be OK to me, but there's way more satisfying stuff out there relative to my taste.

In regards to the Advent heritage floor speakers do they need to be powered by an amp with more power than 37w per channel?
 
That's true about the pawn shops or even the Goodwill or Salvation Army, Craigslist, etc. Lots of good places to find speakers out there. I found my Kef 103.2's in a pawn shop and loved them right away! But yes, knowing what I know now...if at all possible, listen first, then buy. Although I've only yet once bought a pair of speakers that I didn't really care for all that much, right away. Haven't heard any of the ones you have listed, but I'd agree with some of the others...save up a little more if you can, or at that price you can find something but it may take more patience and leg work...which also costs money (gas) and time. Maybe look for some KLH or AR? Those can often be had for under $200. Also the new Andrew Jones Pioneer's are decent, although I sold mine quickly.

Update:

I found a pair of Klipsch Heresy I's at an estate sale this morning. Got them for next to nothing!

Gonna try them for a while and see if I like what I hear.

How about Pioneer HPM-100's vs JBL L100's vs. Klipsch Heresy I?

Do any of those stand out above the other?

Any more suited for rock music? For a smaller room?
 
I don't much care for any of them. The JBL and the Pioneers will be capable of producing some bass; the Heresys pretty much don't even pretend to (which isn't necessarily a bad thing -- honesty is the best policy). All three of those models, to me, are unacceptably harsh sounding. I find all three to be ear-gougers... but there's no doubt that all three of those models have legions of fans.
