Oppo BDP-103D potential standalone dac?

Hello fellow akers,

I have a theory that I'm curious about it being correct, I just upgraded to the 4k realm of video consumption by purchasing a LG Nano cell series 85 4k TV. I use my HT system for 2 channel listening for music, and 5.1 for theatre.

In my chain is a Yamaha RXV3800(as a preamp), An OPPO BDP-103D connected to the multi ch inputs of the yamaha(for my digital music catalog through tidal and qobuz utilizing the app mconnect+ on my smart phone through upnp connection) as well as 1080p blu ray video playback.

And an Acurus A125x5 multi ch amplifier for powering my center, front and surround channels. I also use my HT set up for video games, which brings my xbox one and ps4 pro into the chain, connected to the yamahas hdmi ports as opposed the to the oppo, because there is quite the latency between the input of the consoles and the oppo presenting the video signal to the tv. But since the oppo does not do 4k natively, and only upscales 1080p to 4k at 24hz, the only option I have for 4k consumption specifically movies through blu ray, is my ps4 pro connected directly to the tv. But I cannot utilize the nice dac that my oppo has, because it cannot operate as a standalone dac.
And my yamaha rxv3800 does not handle 4k signals.

But I was curious if I were to hook a hdmi splitter (not a switch) to the hdmi input coming from the ps4 pro, to the oppo as well as the new TV, could I watch my 4k content and utilize the dac from the oppo and send the audio to the multi ch inputs to the yamaha. So i don't have to buy a new pre amp or dac? Sorry I know thats a lot of info to deal with, but any input from you guys would be amazing. Hoping that I can make this work without having to buy all new equipment pretty much.

If you're sticking strictly to HDMI sources then yes a 103D will do what you want. I have been using a 103 then a 105 now a 103D to downmix multi channel HDMI to 4.0 and pass signal to old Sansui quad. If you need a USB DAC as well then you need to step up to the 105(D) but iirc the USB DAC functionality is only 2 channel.

My question is if I can use the oppo 103d as a make shift standalone dac by sending the signal from my ps4 pro to it(just for audio) and thus sending the decoded analog audio signal to the yamahas multi ch input.

but also simultaneously sending the signal of the ps4 pro directly to the tv by using a hdmi splitter. So i can view my 4k content on my new tv.

Don't even need a splitter. Oppo will do it for you.

But the bdp 103D doesn't do 4k, just upscaled 1080p. And only at 24hz

Does your PS Pro have an digital output compatible with the Oppo? If so, use that to send the audio to the Oppo and HDMI out to the TV.

I'm not sure I understand the question. When you said digital output do you mean s/pdif? It does have that. But i was under the impression that the oppo cannot utilize the full audio signal from the spdif input. And will downscale the signal, as opposed to converting the hdmi signal to analog.

Not being familiar with the PS4 I was asking what outputs on that unit are compatible with the Oppo inputs. Since it appears the PS4 has an digital optical output (spdif) then I'd recommend the PS4 optical output be connected to the Oppo optical input. Then connect the Oppo 7.1CH outputs to your receiver/avr inputs.

The Oppo may not be able to decode the optical signal at the highest resolution delivered by the source (PS4) but it will give you R/L/C/SurrR/SurrL sound. I believe that's the best you'll be able to do until you are ready to upgrade some gear.

So I apologize, for some reason I thought that even though the oppo was not 4K that it would pass through a 4K signal from aux HDMI in to HDMI out. I was apparently incorrect, you will need a splitter.
