Optimus LX-8

I traded my old beater Advent Utilities today with a friend for a fine conditioned pair of Realistic Optimus LX-8 speakers. Each has a 9" Peerless woofer and twin Lineaum tweeters. Driven by my Yamaha RX-V1 connected via Indigo Blue cables, they are dynamic. image superbly and have a great "jump factor", the ability to leap from quiet to loud very convincingly, so highly prized by the late J. Gordon Holt.

I'm happy and so is my friend who now has four pair of Larger Advents. :scratch2:

Wow, have a pair myself, garage duty. You like them so far? I'm a little surprised at the exchange, especially given the reputation, around here, for the Large Advents. There isn't a lot posted or available on the LX-8 or 10. Both were likely sold in much smaller quantities than the (in)famous LX5 speakers (or RCA equivalent). I have the LX5 and RCA speakers, 3 or 4 pair (can't recall now).

What do you mean by "jump factor"?

I saw a trashed pair of the 10's that I passed on last year, and I recently picked up some 5's, but I've yet to see the 8's yet. You should post pics!

Jump factor is the ability to go from pianissimo to forte, i.e. from very quiet to quite loud, without compression. This does not mean that the LX-8s will fill a barn with 100 db of dynamic range but under normal listening conditions in my 18' by 15' room, they perform admirably.

The Larger Advents are easy to like, akin to my friendly Basset Hound, Stella. But like her, they are slow and dark, not up to the speed and definition of more agile species.

Then I concur. Always refered to this as dynamic range. 6 of one, half a dozen of the other. It's all good. Glad you like them. The woofer is too large, for that volume, but some people have countered with more fiber fill. I haven't tried that, but I'm not at all serious about making them any better. They do the job I ask of them and that works for me. Besides, still have way too many projects lined up as it is.

LOL. Nice clarification.

I wanted a pair of LX-8's when they first came out. I've been looking for a used pair... casually... for a while. Not high on my list of wants, but definitely there.

I would have traded as well. But that's me.

I wonder how well the offer from the 8 would do if it and the tweeter were put into a transmission line cabinet? Might make for a fun project.

That is the speaker although mine look more like the one on the right.
I think mine were pulled from a garage, can't recall now. Took me a couple hours to clean them up, but they sure work great. One piece of advice, keep those tweeters clean. Any build up WILL impact performance. I own many Linaeum speakers and they all improve with cleaning. It's a very thin/light film and any build up on the tweeter will impact it's performance. Warning, it is a very delicate process, so if you do clean them, be very gentle.

The woofers look like Infinity woofs.....The Linaeum tweeter I heard lacked top end/air. I think they need a super tweeter to get some sparkle....

If you like the rising top end of most modern metal dome tweeters you will find the Linaeum sounds a little flat. I do not.

I have to agree, if I'm reading correctly. Going from say a HPM speaker (have 40/60/100) you would find the linaeum seemingly dull. But not having auditioned something else just prior the linaeum can be impressive, especially off axis. In fact, their only weakness, if you will is ON axis listening, which is why they are best NOT toed in like most traditional speakers.

Good grief, just had a scary thought. Sort of a line array using a few of those tweeters, like 4 or more per side. Hmmmm....

I have a pair of Pro X77 with the mono pole linaeum. They are smooth with just a bit less sparkle than the titanium domes on my JBL L20T. My complaint is very poor vertical dispersion. Tweeters need to be at ear level or tilted pointing at the listener's ears, otherwise they drop off significantly. I am actuallt trying to unload them for something more favorable to casual listening. Not sure if that holds true for the dipole versions you all have.
