Optimus STAV-3000

Live_Wire

Realistic Ak'er
I happened across one of these working for $25. Only problem was the bulbs were gone and the protection relay was dirty.

After I fixed the relay, the sound came back to normal. Nice and clean and quite powerful given it's a later Radio Shack receiver (1990 era). I liked the 3200 I use to have so I figured this one would be nice as well.

Specs are 100 WPC into 8 Ohms with 0.05% THD.

Wondering if anyone else here has one of these :music:

I picked one up in a CL deal for some MACH 3's. Mine is a STAV-3250, same specs as yours. Honestly, I tried to get the guy to keep it, but he said he just wanted to get rid of it because he didn't have a need for it. I picked it up and was surprised at how heavy it was (as heavy as the STA-2600). Anyway, I hooked it up in the living room to some 1050's and it sounds pretty darn good. I was also impressed with the FM tuner, picks up a TON of stations.

All in all, I'm glad I chose to take it home!

Yep, I have seen that page. I still have the book for my old STAV-3200, in which a lot of the information is the same really.

Even though these were the later generation Radio Shack receivers, they still have that quality sound to them. The only thing that was a little strange, is the faceplate is plastic with a brushed appearance to look like aluminum.

Having worked for RS for many years (ended around 1990) I wasn't often surprised by the quality or performance, but I also knew that RS didn't build it's equipment. RS used companies like Kenwood, Harmon Kardan to build many of their products, as well as other well known name brand companies.

My STA-2500 is still running strong, performance wise, with the only issue being the volume control is finally worn. Not bad at all given it's a realistic, eh? 24 years old.

look at a pic of an sta2600 display and layout and look at that stav3000. i'll bet they added video switching facilities and rebadged it.

Yes, the Optimus Line was built for RS by either Sony or RCA, IIRC. I have a STA-2160 that I bought brand new in 1988 and it has the pre-historic "surround" button below the speaker switches. I used mine in my room from 88 until 1992, and then I put it away back in it's original box. There it has sat since 1992 and I really don't know why I still have it after all these years, hehehe! I did like how it sounded with my Speakers I used which were Cerwin Vega R-24's at that time. Sold the R-24's after I got my brothers original pair of Kenwood LS-408B's. One was at our business storeroom. I took it home and with luck on my side, I managed to locate the other one and make them a pair again after they were separated for a good 5 years. The STA-2160 sounded really good with my LS-408B's. Around 1998-99 I went back to RS and bought a RCA(professional series) STAV-3970, that if I'm not mistaken, was made by Pioneer for RCA exclusive to Radio Shack at that time. Currently the RCA is in daily use in our entertainment center powering my beautiful pair of HD77 Marantzs. It amazes me how similar the remote of the RCA is to my DVL-909 Pioneer player. And even the faceplate is eerily similar to the DVL-909.

I don't really see the similarities. I know that a lot of their receivers had similarities though, I just don't see them between the 2600 and the 3000. Maybe you mean another model?

Decent Gear

I own one of these receivers under Memorex badge. It was priced like a bag of chips so I decided to get it. When I hooked the speakers for the first time ( Kef Q) it blown me away, the sound is very similar to my old Realistic STA 82 huge stage and briliant stereo imaging, tube like juice, but the power is clearly noticable. Someone said there is a prehistoric surround, they just used more atractive name back in 90's, I have found no diffence between its surrond and 70's Quadrovox in STA 82. That one manufactured in Korea I believe by Inkel, however Tandy demanded the standards from new contractor. I anyone have a chance to become an owner of any old Optimus/ Memorex/ Realistic people dont hesitate because for the performance the price is a joke and I bet for same performance audiolabs, marantzes or whatever its called will cost you at least 1000% more secondhand. GREETINGS

And I forgot to add that Phono stage in STAV 3000 is great, its really rare phenomenon in audio below 200$ SH :)

Hi there,
I have also a STAV 3000, European version (Belgium > 220v 50Hz)
It worked very fine until I lent it to a friend.

Result one output is open ( predriver opened / blown) and the volume control is out of use!.

I could get the service manual STAV 3000, and the problem is that at Radio Shack, there is no volume control any more from this model (with central point for loudness control).
Any one can help me please?

Boris

Just received my Optimus 3000. It had taken a hit on the right front side, small crack at the fm button on the front going up about 1 inch. one side of the crack was pushed Inside of the other side. Had to work to get both sides back even. Inside, it had broken one of the supports on the far right of function board, it was moved enough so that the phono, am and fm buttons would not engage. Super glued the support back and now buttons engage, cleaned the speaker buttons, blew it out with compressed air. Prior to cleaning, the protection circuit was on so much it would not play. After, plays great. Very powerful.
