Optimus T-120 vs Cerwin Vega's

Hey Folks,

I have a pair of T-120's that i've been using for over 24 years. Woofers replaced, but the mids need re-foamed and the cross overs need an overhaul. What are your thoughts with scrapping the idea of fixing them up and switching to an equivalent version of Cerwin Vega's?

I could certainly use the higher power capacity. The CV's look like they can handle more "ruffness".

I have not done a side-by-side comparison, but I am looking at a pair of Cerwin-Vega E712's

Welcome to AK and Merry Christmas James!! As to the T-120's "It Depends" What were the woofers replaced with when they were changed? Originals, woofers that matched the specs? This would all play into the next step for me. New capacitors will go a long way, and refoaming the original midranges is a good plan.

As to the Cerwin Vegas, they were always considered party speakers when I was coming up thru the ranks, I guess it depends on what you are looking for, more power handling? Something new?
 
c-v's will need surrounds replaced as well.

i used to like c-v when i was young and wanted loud.

nowadays, i'd pick the t120s but i would want the original woofers not replacements that need foam.

the t120, being ported, makes it harder to find something that would drop in and sound good.

you could call parts express and see if they have a suitable driver.

the other option would be pricey and time consuming and that would be to calculate the box volume and port area and buy bass box 6 and start plugging driver parameters into it until you find a driver that models well.

the last 2 options might(most likely) require crossover mods to the low pass filter.

anything you do will not look right since the t120 used a square frame woofer.

i'd suggest that you keep shopping.
 
There are several suitable woofer replacements from Parts Express. If you're willing to seal off the port, they have a closeout woofer that will get you going inexpensively. https://www.parts-express.com/10-10ounce-Woofer-299-4137?quantity=1

You can use the good ole Classic 10" with the port. Typically Radio Shack ran the woofers wide open (no crossover) to save $. You could use the L-pads to achieve proper balance between tweeter, mid and woofer.
