Optonica A Quality Brand?

I have this problem, I keep swapping different amps/receivers/speakers all of the time [Edited by Moderator]
Lately, I have been trying to mate systems that sound good together as well.
I keep coming back to an old Optonica SA-4141 Receiver that seems to sound good with every speaker pair I put on it. It sounds better, "to me" than all of my other Harmon Kardon, Denon, Etc. Can it be that I have judged Optonica harshly all of these years?

Optonica.....at least early on.....made a pretty good product.
But they came too late to the party.....to dislodge the bigger players.

That wasn't uncommon with the Japanese companies. Only a couple (like Sony) were big enough to do whatever they felt like in-house.
 
I've got the big Opto the 5605,125 watts/channel monster and it's pretty nice although I think a recap is due.I can't seem to post a pic of it but it's on my profile page under "my gear" if ya wanna take a look at her.

That's a beautiful beast. Especially in black. What is giving you the impression a recap is due?

Serious question as my memory of sound is terrible and I often wonder if I could improve mine then tell myself not to mess with what isn't broke. The Optonica is overly bright to some.... and mine is but I find it easy to dial out. I had some issues with distortion on one side and it turned out to be the balance pot dirty (at least I think that was it as it cleared up exercising the pot). I am not an electronics expert by any means.
 
Optonica was pretty big when I lived in Japan in the mid to late 70s.

A friends still uses his and it sounds pretty good.
