Optonica SM-4545 Amp causing LOUD constant buzz

I've been using this integrated amp constantly for the past 8 years or so, and the other day out of the blue it started to emit a very loud and constant buzz. It deafens out anything else. I've isolated the amp, connected it with another speaker and confirmed it is the cause of the buzz. I sprayed it down with some deoxit in hopes it would do something, but no change.

I'd really like to avoid buying a new amp, cuz I'll probably have to go non vintage. This loud buzz is there regardless of whether I go to A, B, or C speakers, and it's there through headphones too. Does anyone know what most likely failed so I can attempt to fix it?

  1. Is the buzz emitted from the amp itself, or the speakers?
  2. Is it one or both channels?
  3. All inputs or only specific inputs?
  4. Do you get it when no other components other than the speakers are connected?
  5. Does it change at all with the setting of the volume control? How about the balance or tone controls?
 
The symptoms are alot more complex than they seemed on my initial review. I was making a list of observations to include in my reply, but the rabbit hole just kept getting deeper and deeper.

I'll look at it with fresh eyes tomorrow so I can hopefully make sense of the combinations that seem to make it want to kill itself, and I'll send you a thorough reply. I appreciate your help.

Just going by your initial description, it sounds like if it is coming through the speakers and headphones (probably both) then I would say its time for some new capacitors in the power supply. Bad caps tend to do what you mentioned but swechsler's comments are also valid as to help narrow it down. ;)

Ok here are my findings (Our default position is with volume at 0, balance 50/50, bass 0, treble 0, and I am testing it with only one speaker one channel at a time) :

LEFT CHANNEL: With variable/defeat switch set to variable and turnover set at 600hz max, maxing bass makes buzz significantly thicker and bassier. Any effect of max treble is negligible. With variable/defeat switch set to defeat, max bass has no effect. Switching between source functions at 0 volume have no effect, unless bass is maxed out with variable on - then you can hear fluttering when quickly changing between source functions.

Volume effects the buzz. On all sources other than phono (tape1, tape2, aux1, aux2, tuner) turning knob has no increase until a sudden and momentary bump at level 2. Here it goes from its default "err" buzz to a louder honking "ee" buzz, then immediately back to the "err" once level 2 is passed and remains here with no change in volume until level 6 where the main change in sound is the pitch gets more "needley" and is slightly louder than default. Important note is max bass with variable on exaggerates all of this -- sound is louder, fuzzier, more distorted.

PHONO however is very different. Volume increases exponentially on its way to level 2 at which time it is suddenly muffled (the reverse of other source functions), once past level 2 volume is at a deafening level and cannot be tolerated. If I turn the balance 100% away from the channel I am currently testing (which would ordinarily put the speaker at 0 volume), then Phono behaves like the other source functions when volume is increased EXCEPT when bass is maxed out with variable on -- then the protection indicator light goes from green to red at level 3 and beyond. If I switch source functions when the amp is in this state, the red light does a quick double blink, then a momentary hold when all buzzing and all volume is turned off, then quickly back to green light and accompanying buzz at the new non-phono source function.

RIGHT CHANNEL: The only differences are 1.) the default buzz is a smidge less abrasive, 2.) there is no fluttering when max bass, variable on, volume 0 while quickly changing source functions, 3.) on all non-phono function sources there is no sudden and momentary bump at level 2 when increasing volume, it remains the default buzz until it too gets needley at level 6, and 4.) increasing volume with phono selected results in same exponential volume increase as left channel except there is no momentary muffling at level 2.
 
I agree with @cademan that it's most likely the power supply (since it affects both channels), but I'm hardly an expert. What's your skill level? Do you feel comfortable removing, testing and replacing components on a circuit board?

I have a little experience soldering - I'm confident in replacing pcb components as long as I can reach them, the only question is how long it'll take me w/ my limited experience. I took it completely apart today, got it splayed wide open from the front and back. The power capacitors look easy enough to replace, as well as anything on the 3 boards around them. The only pain I see, which I havent figured out yet, is how to reach the boards behind the face plate (should I need to). Seems the face is stuck on because of the switch knobs on the face.

Replacing components I can do, but I'm completely clueless on how to test them. I have a multimeter, but don't know much beyond connectivity.
 
Hopefully an expert will see this thread and chime in. I'd hate to recommend doing something that's complete off base. If not, you can ask a moderator to move this thread to the DIY subforum.
