Original Advent Loudspeaker replacement

Hi all,

I currently have a Luxman R-115 running a pair of original Advent loudspeakers (had the speakers rebuilt a few years back). Sounds fantastic!

That said, I'm itching for a change lately, and I think you'd likely tell me to start with the speakers. Is there a worthy (modern) replacement in the $500 (pair) range? Bookshelf speakers would be ideal.

Any advice appreciated!

Get out there in the real world and listen to some speakers yourself, this will be your best shot at a practical answer to your question. My experience tells me that in so far as currently available new speakers it will not be easy to find any for < $500 that will best the Advents. There are indeed speakers less than $500 that do many things well but not as well overall as the Advents.
 
I've run "stacked" (two pair) of OLA's in one of my systems for several years. In my opinion, it's not all that hard to beat the Advents in mids and highs with a more modern speaker. But bettering that Advent bass could prove to be more of a challenge, especially in a bookshelf.

What if I was to increase the budget to $1000 or less, new or used. A good pair of modern advent replacements?

Yes, now you're getting more realistic. This option allows for one of the really good $500 pair of speakers that does midbass on up very well paired with one or two subwoofers to fill in the bottom end for a really good well-rounded system.

Let your ears be your guide.

Listen to everything you can because none of us hear or listen the same way.

There are numerous choices all dictated by your own unique situation. Things room size & acoustic properties, amplifier power, listening habits like what kind of music and how loud you listen all play a part in selecting speakers YOU will be happy with.

A little time spent now will yield years of enjoyment.
