Ortofon OM 10

Eastham

More Class-A than ever!
So I just went ahead and bought a Ortofon OM 10 cart with a new styli from a friend he cut me a good deal if I must say £20 and post to my house, I was thinking about how this cart + styli would stack up to my Shure M75-6 with it's .6mil conical styli and how compatible it will be with my PL-12D's arm. Any thoughts?

A lot of it is personal preference. IMO, the OM10 is a decent cartridge, but the somewhat expensive upgrade to a 20 or higher stylus gets it far beyond decent. I've got no experience with the M75, but have always preferred the Ortofons, including the OM10, to most any Shure. It does require clean records and few flaws in the rest of the signal chain. I also recently found a good deal on an OM10 and snapped it right up. There are others that prefer other cartridges, so let your ears be your guide. The compliance increases as you move up the stylus line, and the 10 should work well on most common arms.

I like mine a lot with my Denon DP 1200. I got mine in a trade with a kind local Aker. I like how lively it sounds and i think it pairs well with the rest of my vintage set up (Yamaha CR 1020 and ADS L810 Speakers).

Clean records is no problem for me, I just hope that this stylus being elliptical will track in the groove better, I love my Shure M75 cart's but I'm just not that much a fan of how warm laid back they sound. I have a few records that have groove damage I'm hoping that the OM10 can like I said track a bit deeper and past the damaged area but I'm not getting my hopes up without some line contact styli. If I like this OM10 I'll definetely grab a 20 styli in the future. He's going to send it 2nd class royal mail so it should be here Monday. :) I also think the OM's just plain look cool.

VividLine is decent but not what I recommend. Use genuine Ortofon. OM 40 slays 2M Black. And yes, the OM with weight plate is great on the PL 12-D, an example of this fine turntable is in my own living room right now. A Stylus 10 or 20 will serve you fine.

New stock Stylus 10s are on ebay at very good prices. One seller has them as a pair for under $80.00 shipped. You don't have to settle for aftermarket.

I'll certainly be upgrading sometime in the future, just maybe not quite yet. The cost of a Ortofon OM 40 stylus is a bit out of reach for now.

A little off topic

For most TT owners... a Super OM 30 cart for $289 plus a 10 stylus would be all one needs

Use the 10 for lesser LPs and 1st spin thrift store finds. Remove the 10 and slip on the 30 for VG+ LPs

Hi,

The OM10 will be a decent match with a PL12D and is about the right quality level.
The arm is a little heavy for it, but it should be fine. For £20 you can't really complain.

rgds, sreten.

For other owners of PL12D's the best budget option is a £25 AT95E, see amazon.
