at the moment i am using an ortofon om20 cartridge and was contemplating an upgrade. my question is, does anyone have any experience with the lp gear replacement stylus for the om40? is the quality there or am i better off staying with genuine ortofon styli? i've heard mixed reviews about aftermarket styli.

Generally you would be better off with a OEM stylus, with a few exceptions. Can't comment on the LP Gear stylus, but if it is Pfansteil, probably not as good.

The OM30 stylus is superb. And you can still pick up a Digitrac 300SE cart/stylus from williamthakker.eu which includes a repackaged OM30 stylus that will fit on your OM body (you snip off one tiny piece of plastic on the stylus grip). The 300SE costs a lot less than buying an OM30 stylus by itself. Good luck!

The Ortofon is : a nude FG 70 diamond ( no mention of the cantilver).

The LPgear version is :Shibata diamond bonded to a thin-wall Zualum cantileve.

Price difference is about eighty dollars.

Go for the Ortofon if it is suitable for the tone arm. :scratch2:
