Ortofon TM & OMP carts.

Robint

Super Member
Can anyone explain to me the difference between the Ortofon p-mount OM & TM carts. I have just won a TM20U cart. for $49 on that auction site, including shipping from Australia. I know the stylus can be used on an OM cart. Should I look for a OMP cart. This cart will be used on a Technics SL-J3 linear tracker.

Thanks

I don't think there's a significant difference between TM and OMP. It's my understanding they're the same.

OM Series Generators/Bodies

Been doing some research on this...

Straight OM's and OMP, OMT, TM, Digitrac all have the same generator with 450mH/750Ohm specs

OM Super has 580mH/1kOhm specs

There are other differences in the DJ range of bodies with impedances going up to 1600 Ohm (and output voltage of 8mV or 10mV which could cause problems with normal MM Headamps)

Those few who have compared OM and OMSuper have not noted major differences... but I have yet to see a critical in depth review.

The OM Super generator does not seem to have been fitted to any P-Mount bodies.

I did see the TM30H mentioned as having an impedance of 600 Ohm - this might have been a typo... seems strange.

Sounds like the "best" OM generator is the OM Super range

dlaloum: The 5xxPs sport the newer VMS generator generator version, but those are rather rare (whereas the 3xx have the older, lower inductance version). Same would go for the Digitrac 450SE, if the specs from Bluz Broz Entertainment are correct.

Hi Manfred,

yes I tracked the specs down for the Digitrac bodies, they seem identical to the standard OM/OMP's

I have a Digitrac 300SE on the way to me - I look forward to giving it a go...

All the best from Melbourne

David: Maybe you didn't notice, but the generator data for the 450SE (as published on the BBE web-site) and the SuperOMs are identical (same would go for the 5xxPs, as mentioned...) - whereas the lower ranking model 380NE has the usual values of the standard OMs...

The old LMs as well as the Hifi-Concordes had yet another slightly different VMS generator version, btw.

Digitrac 450SE is OM Super Generator

OOOh no I had not noticed....

So digitrac also used the better generator in some models....

But the price for the 480SE is such as to direct people back to Ortofon....

Trouble is I was specifically trying to find an OMP/OMT body with the Super generator.....

Now you have pointed out that this does in fact exist - and it is called Digitrac 450SE.

But at US$123 I can have the same needle with the more basic generator... the Super generator is simply not worth the additional US$160 !!

Still if anyone out there has a 450SE body they want to get rid of, I have a good home for it...

Och, don't wonder too much - BluzBrozEntertainment has had "pharmacy prices" (does that phrase exist in English, too?) on most of their phono equipment stock pretty much ever since I became aware of 'em - which pretty surely also is the reason, why one hardly ever sees 'em mentioned on vinyl related forums, 'cause they are generally too expensive and hence their usefulness is pretty much limited on their web-site sometimes being good for reference/identification purposes.
