Ortofon upgradability?

I picked up an older JVC TT that came with an Ortofon OM-5E. Turns out the cantilever is still there but appears to have lost the diamond. The cleaned up and repaired TT is moving on with an old Empire cart w/NOS stylus installed but the OM-5E is staying.

I have heard a lot about the upgradability of the OM-10 by replacing stylus with up to OM-40 stylus. Ortofon also says that all stylii are interchangeable within the same product range.

Can anyone tell me if the OM-5E is considered within the OM-10/20/30/40 range, whether I can indeed make it an OM-40. I'd hate to buy a stylus and find it didn't work.

I've called the Ortofon importer (you can get the number off the Ortofon website). They were very helpful and am sure they would be happy to talk to you about same.

Also be aware that isopropyl alcohol will dissolve the glue that hold the needle onto Ortofon carts; an alcohol-based cleaner may have been what messed up the old stylus.

Thanks for the advice.

I have checked at the ortofon site; from what they say it sounds like it should work but I was hoping for specific confirmation. Bigerik does say it will work from 5s to 40s in that other thread. I guess the phone call is the sensible idea.
