outboard xover

Hi all,

I made outboard xover's last year for sound dynamics 300Ti speakers. I posted pics of the final product and was very pleased with the results. Shortly after that I decided to make outboard xover's for my B&W N803's. I finished the preliminary design and will post pic's once I get a new digital camera.

These speakers are 3 way with 3 filters. My plan is to make a two level xover. One level will contain the LF and HF filters, having very few parts, and the other level will have the MF filter, which has lots of parts. Both levels will have inductors and they will be in optimal positions for each filter. Each board will be about 8” x 11” and I would like to keep overall height as low as possible. My question is what material should be used, between the upper and lower boards, to keep the coils from interacting? I don’t want this to end up 10” tall.

Thanks for the reply. However I will not have to make any changes to the speakers or cabinets. If I ever plan to sell them they can be returned to original configuration by re-installing the original crossovers and one set of the original binging posts. My goal is to have the xovers outside the cabinet and use higher quality components. B&W cut corners on the N803, by and using electrolytics, other lower quality components and some iron core inductors. The 803 diamond xovers have been much improved by using all air core coils, better quality resistors, heatsinks and Mundorf Mcap and Supreme gold/silver oil caps. I have all the schematics and values for the N803's and the 803 diamond xovers. I do not plan to use Diamond values.

I have two questions regarding the two level xover I’m planning to build. I mentioned, in an earlier post, the reason for two levels is to make the footprint as small as possible. I also want overall height as low as possible.

Crosstalk between coils on upper and lower boards, I believe, can be eliminated by positioning the upper board about 20cm above the lower board. This is taller than I would like.

The following is a proposed re-design. The design has a total of five coils which would be located on one board. Caps and resistors would be on the other board. This should allow optimal coil positioning with, one coil lying on its side and, the other four coils round it. The layout would be clock like, with coil axes at 12 and 6 at 0 degrees and coil axes 3 and 9 at 90 degrees, all in the horizontal plane. The axis of the center coil will vertical. Coil heights will be adjusted to keep their centers on a common plane. Also, if coils don’t affect cap or resistors, the lowest overall height could be achieved.

1. Does anyone know if a coil’s magnetic field has any effect on capacitors or resistors?
2. Does anyone think there is a downside to this layout? Please explain it.
