Outdoor setup- help needed.

Hey folks,

I'm looking to make an outdoor audio system that operates off a 12v battery. I'm hoping the system can put out 80-85 decibels at 2 meters and be able to run for 12 hour periods over multiple days. I'm also interested in getting an amp that has a built in USB port so it can charge an MP3 while it operates. I also need waterproof speakers to survive the elements. This system doesn't have to be the nicest, but does need to be durable, have quality output, and can be taken apart and repaired easily. Im planning on making a sleek housing within a waterproof case to hold the amp and MP3. Less wires the better.

I'm hoping for advice with pairing the appropriate speakers and amp.

I have found an amp and speakers that I like, but I'm thinking they likely aren't compatible.

i would stay away from the Pyle PCAU22, its actually about 10W per channel. 40w is at 10% THD

The Lepai will get you to the volumes you want BUT: There are any number of other considerations that I can think of and that is by no means comprehensive. For starters, the unit needs a 5 amp supply for full output. For 12 hours of playing, that means a 70 amp-hour life in the battery with a low internal resistance. Since the voltage tends to drop as a battery discharges you probably need somewhat more then that so that performance is still good at the end of the day. How much more than that? I really have no idea, I'm no expert and have no experience at this. Do you need a motorcycle or even car battery or would a computer back up battery do? Again, no clue. Then there is the issue of dispersion. In a room, the walls reflect much of the sound back to you, most especially in the lower frequencies. Outdoors those reflections go away so the lower frequencies drop in volume. This is adjusted for by something called baffle step compensation but that actually brings the level of the mids and highs down to the level of the bass. If that needs to be as much as 3 or 6 dB that means your power requirement doubles (3 dB) or quadruples (6 dB). At 6 dB you are pushing the Lepai for all its worth.
