The universe is a big place, perhaps the biggest.
Haven't seen much on outdoor speakers.

I recently picked up a pair of Moderno M6 6 1/2 outdoor two-ways. Made by Sonance. Hadn't heard them before buying, just went on reviews. Went to Best Buy and listened to the Yamaha, Bostons, all that. The Klipsch and the Bose sounded great, but at around 3 bills, neither was happening.

I wanted a speaker big enough to handle all the music I could throw at it, and sound good at low volumes. We have a hot tub on the patio, and they needed to be heard above that noise without blasting the neighbors.

The Modernos fit the bill perfectly. Pretty good response, especially when compared with the other offerings: 45 Hz while many were 60 and above. The sound is great - even with the old Fisher RS-727 AV receiver running the show. Easy installation, solid brackets and solid speakers. For the $, not sure you can find a better outdoor speaker.

They'll sound best in open air on stands and the sound won't carry if they face you and your back is to the house.

I use Axiom Algonquins with an outdoor sub on a porch.
 
I picked up a pair of ADVENT Calypso Indoor and Outdoor Speakers locally for $30. Have that paired with an IPOD 160H Classic and Lepai LP-2020A+ Tripath Class-T Hi-Fi Audio Mini Amplifier.

Sounds great for outside and I can pick it up and go about anywhere.

I have a pair of Advent Outdoor Speakers which I purchased at Costco some 10 yrs. ago, don't have the model, they were $90.00/pair back then. They sound great and still going strong in my outdoor terrace. In another property at the beach, I have Polk Atrium 5 pair and the sound is excellent. The bass performance of the Polk is better than the Advents, but the Advents have a very nice midrange. The Advents are powered by the second zone of my Marantz SR-5001 AVR, and the Polks by the second zone of a Marantz SR-5008 AVR. For the second zone I only use analogue IC's from the sources.

These are all nice options. The Modernos seem to have great range. They have a bit of a bottom end punch, which is fine. If I want booming bass, I'll go to the cave.

I have them mounted on the house facing the back yard. We have a metal awning over the porch, so the sound pretty much stays within that area, which is what I wanted. Our yard is pretty shallow.

I wanted to mount them on the awning columns, firing back at the house, but they looked out of place - too big for that. So really the only option was the house, and so far, great!
 
Mounting speakers on your house facing the backyard is ok if you're not fussy about how they sound.

Try them the way I suggested ( I have mine on plant stands ) and you'll hear a huge improvement.
