Outlaw Audio Model 990 pre/processor?

tentoze

Twangophile
Anyone have one of these, or even heard one? It caught my eye for the USB capability, although it seems to have a wealth of pre-amp features as well. Curious how it would be to use the DACs to pull the music off the computer I've set up in the living room a couple days ago. And I seem to always be in need of a decent pre for one purpose or another around here.

I've no familiarity with that unit, but if the build quality and sound is anything like my Outlaw 1050 HT system, it's probably a good bet. Outlaw has a great rep for new gear.

I believe the 990 is almost the same as the Sherwood Newcastle P-965 less the balanced inputs. I owned the Sherwood and the sound quality of any source was stellar.

Thanks for the feedback, folks. Anyone else is welcome to add to this. I'm still pondering options.

A close friend of mine uses the 990 ( I believe) as the preamp/processor in his semi-over the top home theater system. He's had issues with various components in his system, but the outlaw has been rock solid. It's very well built, feature packed, and sounded very good to my ears.

Yup. It's basically a clone of the Sherwood (or the Sherwood is a clone of it with more toys). Sound quality is pretty good in 2 channel too for a processor.

When a friend said he's got a Proceed AVP up for grabs, I looked it up. Impressive. Dac, backup pre all in one.
Edit: Wow this is a fast moving field. Things go out date in a couple of years.

Have heard there mono block amp, And it was very good. This pre-pro has always gotten good on-line reviews. Outlaw, Much like Rotel, Seems like good mid to upper level gear. Not Krell, But far from junk.

I have been in the market to replace my Yamaha C-70 preamp. I was also looking at the Outlaw 990 for the pre/processor capability and the balanced outputs. I keep finding good feedback and will probably pull the trigger after the 1st of the month.... if not sooner. They are advertising free shipping on anything over $500.00 until the end of July! :O

Speaking of new Sherwood I have a simple but decent system in my study. A Sherwood RX-4109 receiver and a pair of Best Buy Insignia 6.5" speakers. The Sherwood is a fairly simple 2 channel receiver rated at 100 watts/channel from 20-20K at .09% distortion, per the owners manual. It has a nice phono stage also. The sound is extremely clean and compared very nicely with the sound I had from my Dynaco SCA-35 amp, brought up to spec by Gold Aero. I don't have the Dynaco any longer, but the Sherwood was a very pleasant surprise. The only downside to the Sherwood is they do not recommend running it with any speakers less than 8 ohms. They even say if you are going to use speaker A+B the speakers should be 16 ohms. This is a strong indication the speakers that exhibit less than 8 ohms impedance could br a real problem for this receiver. The Insignias sound great with it.

I have the Outlaw 990,very versatile unit, I think someone on the Outlaw forum did what you are thinking of doing Tentoze, it is rock solid and the firmware is upgradable,it has a pretty descent mm phone stage.Just my 2 cents.

Eric, I've been around a couple of Outlaw Surround Sound systems, and I was very impressed. When I redo my TV/Listening Room next year, I will have one of their 7-channel receivers as my main unit.

I can also vouch for the above recommendation on Sherwood, especially their Newcastle line. I have a Newcastle receiver that has been a workhorse in my HT system for probably 7 years now. I've found no real reason to upgrade yet.
