Outlook Express Problem.

Everytime I try to retrieve email via Outlook Express I get the following error message:

Unable to logon to the server using Secure Password Authentication. Account: '***********', Server: *********, Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR popgate unknown command', Port: 995, Secure(SSL): Yes, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC18

I assured I had the POP/SMPT info and port numbers correct. I tried connecting with Avast virus Outlook Express resident provider turned off with no luck. I erased the mail acount and reconfigured, no luck. Everything was working fine a few days ago, no updates have been done other than perhaps virus definitions. I am able to get email via webmail provided by ISP. And actually I got the error message intermitantly because for a stint this morning I was able to download mail, then it started giving me the message again.

What am I missing here?

Something tells me that your Internet Service Provider is having problems. If you could get messages for a little while, that probably says that it is not a problem with how Outlook was set up. I would try calling whoever provides your internet, and maybe they will tell you something. I had an error a while back where my e-mail just was not working. My Internet company actually had me enter in a different port number to get it to work. Hope everything works out.

I recently had problems with my email. It turned out that the authentication server was down. I was able to get my mail through my ISP's webmail page.

what type of account? ISP, domain name? POP to web interface?

If ISP can you log onto their web mail interface? If domain can you log onto your host mail server via web interface?

What version of OLex? What OS?

Maybe look at your Account / Properties / Server. There's a checkbox that says Logon Using Secure Password Authentication. I don't know how or why it may have changed, but try unchecking it.

Is your email account OUTSIDE your ISP? If so your provider may have started blocking port 25 (SMTP) so that you would have to use an alternate port, such as 587 (for Mail.com).

Call your ISP to see if they're blocking, if they are then call the Email provider or check their setup page to find an alternate port that can be used.

That would only be for sending mail not receiving.

POP port is almost always 110

.

My ISP calls for these port #'s
Incoming mail port #: 995, secure connection (SSL) checked
Outgoing mail port #: 465, secure connection (SSL) checked

I dont have any idea what port values are let alone what a port is! What I do know it was working 2 days ago. I have to call when I get a chance. I get webmail. Hopefully I aint caught a computer STD or something. THe only logicall thing I can think of perhaps my Avast antivirus had downloaded an uncompatible upgrade or there is a problem with my ISP????

If your ISP is ATT they have been having email issues for a few days (intermittent). there is nothing you can do except wait for them to sort out their issues.

Its ATT you guessed it. Still not working this morning?

I spoke with them today. Im able to send and recieve now but I am concerned they gave me a workaround that might be a security breach. Contrary to how I had it set before, they told me to delete the check when it asks to log secure password authentication.

Also they had me check something that said "leave copy of message on server"....

Obviusly something changed on their end because I had not changed the setting I have been using for 2 years sending and recieving email .

It is a bit of a security breach not to use secure authentication with an email server, but my ISP doesn't use secure authentication at all. In fact none of the ISP's in my area use secure authentication, which I always thought was stupid. It's mainly only a problem if you connect to an unknown wireless network, and the owner of the network is "sniffing" packets. I only use webmail (https) if I'm on somebody elses wireless.

After it leaves your ISP or mail provider, you think its secure? What about once it reaches your intended recipient? Unlikely on both accounts. Never believe your email is private.

dew.

Of course email isn't private, but secure authentication is a good way of protecting your email user/password credentials. That's what I was talking about, not the privacy of email. Ever run Wireshark while you check email on an unsecure pop server? :D

Security and privacy are not the same.

What does "leave copy of message on server" mean?

It means that the mail server does not delete the email from its storage after you download it to your computer's local email client.

"Normally" you would do this if you were using multiple computers and wanted to check emails from them. That way there would always be a copy for you to get regardless of what you were using.

This is also selected if you use web mail along with your local machine. That way you can log into web mail and all of your messages would still be there.

Once you view/download a message from your local email client (OLex etc) the server marks the message as downloaded so you do not see again from your local machine but it is still on the mail server.

I get the same Port 25 error for outgoing mail on one home computer with Outlook Express. It has been frustrating trying to troubleshoot. I only get it on my XP PC with a direct connection to my DSL router.

My laptop at home, also running Outlook Express with exactly the same mail server settings has no trouble sending mail. The only difference in the setup is the laptop uses Windows2000 and has a wi-fi connection to my DSL.

Both computers run Avast anti-virus and I only started getting the problem with outgoing mail on my PC after I installed Avast. I have disabled the outgoing mail scans on Avast, but it still will not send mail and gives me the same error message as you have.

I suspect there is still some Avast / firewall / or OS conflict that is causing the problem on the one computer and not the laptop.

I should call ATT, my DSL provider, but I am too lazy to hang on the phone.

Cheers, Snade
