Owning McIntosh over the other big dogs, what's it like?

Interesting responses. I've enjoyed reading them all!

Well, I think that settles it.. I'm going to set my sights for a McIntosh. They sure don't come up often, but I've got a couple of years to look so I think I'll be okay. :)

Its interesting you say that, because after I rebuilt a McIntosh MC250 for a friend of mine, I have been bitten by the McIntosh bug.....
Im setting my sights on a MC2100, or if I can wait, perhaps a MC2205......an MC2300 would be another choice......
But, I think a MC2100 would be an excellent place to start, there seems to be a lot around, and they seem to be one of the more accessible Macs ....

It seems to me the early ones like the MC250,2100, 2300, 2205 etc...all have the same basic design, in this design or topology, is the secret of the Mac sound......

I have been studying the Pre-amp circuits, and although I am not McIntosh expert, I do like the look of the C28 pre-amp......

Looks like we're both headed down the same path! Should be fun. :)

I'll be looking forward to hearing your thoughts about the Mc gear because of your extensive knowledge on amplifier circuitry as well as Sansui.. since I'm in a similar situation, gear-wise. I'll letcha know if I find any McIntosh gear.

Headed home and right off the bat I was amazed as, when I plugged this 42 year old behemoth in, it lit up, the meters bounced, and the amp balanced out the bright Focals as it immediately began belting smooth, strong & clear sound. I didn't even need, or use, a Pre. Over forty years old, and this McIntosh had the sound signature and endurance to floor the competition and fill my room with lush sound. The kind of sound that makes your knees weak, and your mind wander, and your body sink far into your sofa.

I've had many rigs that where set up without the use of a preamp by using variable outputs from sources that had them direct to a power amp, or using a passive preamp for those that didn't. That is part of the key to the exceptional sound you are experience. Adding a preamp to your set-up will change the sound, sometimes adding a veil that is removed w/o a preamp. Welcome to the world of minimalist audio reproduction.
