It's a very good effort,but I'd tend to agree,you just can't beat styrofoam,polystyrene or even thick foam cut to fit (I know the latter can up the packing cost quite a bit),but it's far better to be safe than sorry.
The thing is with layers of cardboard is that they don't always absorb impact all that well and neither does bubble wrap (you've got to kinda imagine if someone accidentally dropped it on a concrete floor from his/her waist down).
All the big heavy receivers/amps that I've had arrive 100% safely with no concerns throughout the years have always been packaged in those materials.
I package the item with the assumption the box will be dropped/fall 15 feet from a trailer landing on a corner on a cement loading dock/roadway/sidewalk. As noted every piece of heavy audio equipment I have received/shipped has a very thick layer of styrafoam surrounding the inner box, if you use anything else it's a guarantee the item will suffer damage. Also insurance is no guarantee of payment if your packaging doesn't meet current standards/materials. You only get one chance at shipping an item, if you screw up forget about a next time.
Now I'm second guessing myself. I don't recall about the platter. I know he said to remove it, but I can't recall if he said not to send it. Since my 1019 is in a console I think I got the plinth part right
Bill lists all of the items that don't need to be sent on his website. The platter is one of them to keep the weight/shipping cost down. If you're shipping an idler drive table, the inside rim of the platter may need to be cleaned up. When I sent my 1229 idler to Bill, the platter was in excellent condition and I did not ship it.
