Packing and moving speakers

Hi folks,

I will be moving soon, and I'm wondering what is the best way to pack my floor-standing speakers. First I will move my stuff into storage for a while; then I will go on a longer move.

I wish I still had the original boxes and inner styrofoam for the speakers, but I don't.

Any suggestions on how to securely pack floor-standing speakers? I intend to be the only one who handles them on the move.

Do I need boxes, or could I get away with just using bubble wrap?

Should I take off the plinths, or does it not matter? Maybe they'd be an advantage in some way?

For reference, the speakers are the Monitor Audio RX6 models.

It just so happens I'm in the process of moving right now. Over the past 3-4 months I've been packing all my gear including about 10 pairs of speakers.

What I've done is pack all the small to medium size speakers in boxes wrapped with HD bubble and styrofoam insulation boards protecting the top, bottom, and all sides. Any fragile grilles have been removed and packed in a separate box.

I have 4 pair that are too large and heavy to easily find boxes and pack so I'm going to transport them a pair at a time in the trunk of the Park Ave. I figure on wrapping each in a blanket and then using more blankets and moving pads between and around to kinda wedge them in place.

A PITA but I think it'll all work out :yes:

So maybe I can pull this off with just some blankets and care? I wonder if I should bother bubble wrapping.

I figured it was better to leave the grilles on to have a better buffer for the speakers. The grilles are kind of delicate though; should I take them off?
 
adding some cardboard outside the foam, specially at the edges, can help.

The times I moved my speakers, wrapped them in bubble, not too carefully, just some material to avoid damaging the veneer. Left the grilles on, wrapped all together, placed them laying on the back with drivers facing to the top.

And moved them by myself with my car, nobody else touched them.

Do "Storage" means some storage service, or your garage?... If some other people will be moving them, I'd use bubble and cardboard outside the bubbles
 
I suggest triple wall boxes, a roll of insulation- both are cheap enough to find or buy. You can tape two boxes together to cover the width, cover the speakers with taped together trash bags to protect from the roll insulation you wrap them with. I have shipped many large speaker this way with no damage. One more thing- reinforce the inside box corners with extra pieces of corregated box strips taped in place. If you have blankets to put in place of of the roll insulation that will work as well. For added insurace I also usually tape some corregated "plates" over the driver area on top of the grill- use blue painters tape to not have tape residue issues. Good luck!

My plan is not to put the speakers into a storage facility and I am trying my hardest to be the only one who handles them. I think I will leave them at someone's house, and then when it's time for the long journey of a move I will try to transport them myself in my car.

I don't know if I'll be able to get my hands on boxes to accomodate the speakers. But I can definitely bubble wrap them. And maybe I'll throw in some cardboard tricks too.

U-Haul sells boxes for moving - good ones, too. Well-designed with just that in mind.

I am fond of uline. They sell a variety of useful packing stuff including corrugated cardboard corner protectors that I think are great for speakers (and amps, receivers, and other sharp-cornered stuff).

When I moved from Texas to Oklahoma and then to Arkansas all in the summer/fall of 2009, all of my speakers were just wrapped in blankets and I had no issues. I picked up a bunch of cheap ones at various stores (thrift, etc). Since it was just me loading/unloading them, except for my best friend helping move the stuff from OK to AR, I knew they would be fine.
