Pair of reconed 16 Ohms woofers.

I just had a pair of speakers reconed trying to have them match so both channels would reproduce music the same way.

Speaker #1 now measures 11.4 Ohms after recone

Speaker #2 now measures 14 Ohms after recone

What's up with this? Is it normal? Both are supposed to be 16 Ohm speakers.

Please help me understand what is going on.

I would say you're either measuring wrong somehow (old test leads can give false readings... try shorting them together to make sure you get 0 ohms), or there is a reason for the mismatch. Reasons could include a bad connection, or non matching voice coils. Both readings are within tolerance for a 16 ohm woofer, but the fact they are not identical is concerning.

I tested other speakers and used my other nice DMM. Yeah, I am concerned that they are not identical and I am worried SQ will suffer because of this. Ugh!

Its probably what the replacement cones and new Voice coils came with. the reconer should have checked them before installing them.He probably didn't have any more around to find a closer match. did you listen to them?
Bummer

That's what I am afraid, he just used whatever was around to get the job done. I listened to them and I can't tell any difference. My Integrated amp has this reverse channel function that's neat and I switch listening to the speakers and honestly both sound the same to my ears.

I don't know them. But as long as they sound similar, its not too bad.
I'm guessing he used aftermarket VC's and cones. are they from an expensive esoteric Speaker?

I wouldn't lose a lot of sleep over it.

Your DMM is showing you the pure resistance @ DC. Both readings are reasonable and acceptable for a 16 ohm driver, and needn't cause immediate alarm.

The actual impedance is a function of AC + frequency, and that likely measures much closer between the woofers across their BW

Not sure if they were esoteric parts, the receipt shows $47 per cone.

Thanks, this helps a lot. You guys all been very helpful. They sound great, I think there's more bass because of the more modern materials used.

I'm surprised you got anyone to recone a speaker for 47$. that doesn't even get a full bag of Groceries.
Enjoy. you speakers

The opposite. ;)

I doubt the DCR was all that consistent off the assembly line.

The voice coils are probably wound with round wire, that's enough to cause the inconsistency at DC the OP is reporting.

RS would blow these out occasionally at half price, a lot of speaker at 199/pr. Small footprint, handsome cabinets, the tandem 8's produced tight fast and really quite impressive bass. Upgrading from the phenolic ring tweeter can take them up another level.

Ask GordonW for a quote next time you need some woogers raccooned. I’m almost positive he could do it cheaper. And his work is top notch.

Please do say more, where can I find those phenolic ring tweeters?

Dang, I did not know about GordonW. So he is the Go To Guy for speaker repairs?
