Panasonic Home Theater System base unit problems

We have had a Panasonic SC-HT95 for quite a while as the heart of our home theater system, and we've been very pleased with it. But now it's got a sporadic problem that we'd like to track down and fix if we can. It will be powered up and operating normally, doing any one of its normal functions (tuner, AUX, etc), when suddenly we'll hear a short loud buzz, and then the unit will shut off. We can turn it back on almost immediately thereafter and have it operate normally. Then sometime later, it'll happen again. Some days we'll be using it for hours without any issues, and other days it'll happen two or three times within just 15 minutes.

This behavior does not seem to correspond to any particular function, temperature, or volume level. We have other components on that particular power bar, and none of them show similar problems (like what would happen with a power surge).

This is the only problem this unit has, and I'd hate to replace it if it's fixable. Suggestions on what the problem is? Thanks all!

A quick Google search indicates this may be a common problem with those systems. It sounds like the amplifier section of the "head unit" is failing and going into protection mode.

A question though. Before this started happening, have you changed ANYTHING connected to the system. Hook up a new TV, move a speaker, trip over a wire?

You probably should check all the connection before doing anything else. Unplug and reconnect everything - one piece at a time to avoid getting things swapped around incorrectly. Look for frayed wires or weak connections. POWER OFF while connecting/disconnecting!
 
Thank you for your response. Now I have some checking to do. I'm curious what search terms you used to find this information. I did several Google searches on this topic before posting, and kept getting results for the video playback stopping, which is a different problem. If you can share the search phrase you used, then I can go look at the issues other folks are having with their units, and hopefully troubleshoot/fix ours. Thanks again!
 
Just "Panasonic SC-HT95 shuts off". Found several results, some with different model numbers, which does not mean they should be ignored, as they may share a lot of parts.

Sorry, no offense or blow-off intended. I wanted to acknowledge your message as soon as I got it, but was pressed for time, and apparently I rushed a bit too much. No we haven't changed anything with the configuration, not for years. That being said, we have two cats in the house and some of the wiring is exposed. There's always the chance that they pulled loose some of that wiring, just enough to create a short. I also did find some references to the possibility that heat buildup can cause problems, and that's a distinct possibility. So I need to take the components stack apart, check all the connections, check the speaker connections, and eliminate wiring and overheating as a possibility. If, after I do all that, we're still having problems, then I'll go back and look for ways to either further refine the testing, or just take it in for repair. Just giving that stack a good dust-cleaning to improve ventilation will probably do wonders. I'm hoping that's all it takes.
