Panasonic RE-7430 AM-FM Stereo from 1971

My neighbor gave me this cool little unit yesterday. Certainly not high fidelity, but for a tabletop stereo it’s not bad. It kicks out a modest 12 watts per channel, with tape and phono inputs. Can’t argue with the styling! There was a matching small turntable/record changer offered by Panasonic at the time with matching brushed aluminum trim, but few probably survived. Everything is in perfect working order, and cosmetically near perfect.

Was the 12WPC the actual rating? If so, not RMS, I'm assuming, because there's no way a radio from 1971 could get that amount of power output with a 25 watt power input.

At any rate, I'd bet you could get some pretty good sound out of that with some decent 2-ways.

I found the service manual online, and it says, “Peak music power 12W”, so probably not RMS, but I ran my Realistic Minimus 7’s with it, and I couldn’t turn it up past six on the volume slider. The oval speakers are 16ohms, so easy to drive, but they suffer from being in the plastic cabinets. Fine for a small office conversation piece. I just think it’s so 70’s cool!

Yes I think it’s really cool too. If it mattered you could retro fit some Fostex or other very efficient full range drivers in those cabs, well dampened first.

Lamp: 6,3 V / 0,25 A or similar ( example: 7 V / 0,1 A) alternative, 6 V LED ( + Greatz ).
