I am picking up the parasound eq-300 tomorrow for $40.00. I have the parasound 1205a amplifier and the parasound dvc-1800 preamp. Any thoughts on the this buy, a waste of money or just the opposite e.t.c. I've never owned an e.q. and I thought it might be interesting to give it a go. Any thoughts will be appreciated, thanks. Will.

Being an old fuddy-duddy the less I mess with the signal coming of my old vinyl the better it sounds. You can temper room and speaker problems to get a flatter response but even with well trained ears it is almost impossible to do without a good mic and sound analyzer with a tone generator. Some talk about a DSP to do this, but in my opinion the added noise and distortion takes more from the original signal than what you gain from equalization. I do not use tone controls either, but of course I am a nut. I do have a very close to live sound stage in my living room though.

Personally, I find EQ indispensable. These days, it's much easier to adjust the EQ to the room without much in the way of fancy equipment. Room EQ Wizard (free), a computer, a decent USB microphone (~$50), and some time to figure out how to use Room EQ Wizard is all you need now. Even adjusting by ear is fine because that adjusts it to your preferences, it just always ends up being less flat.

I'm one of those DSP advocates as my preference is a MiniDSP. However, old school EQs are still a preference for many around here. $40 seems like a good price for that model.
