? Passive sub....use AVR or seperate amp?

Thinking about buying a Canton Plus C subwoofer to add to my system. Will it perform as well using my approx. 2004 era Denon AVR-687 or should I use a dedicated amp for the Canton Plus C
Are there any advantages to either scenario? What is the minimum wattage needed to make the sub "sing" well?
The Canton says Western Germany on the back so it is probably from right before the Wall came down in Berlin.
In either case will the sound be better than with an active sub?

From what I can tell, you MUST use a dedicated amp for your subwoofer, as your amp is designed to output a line level subwoofer signal which is to be amplified by a separate amp, either within the sub in the case of an active sub or through another external amp in your case.

Thanks Dave, Will this sub work with any speakers in a 5.1 or 7.1 set up? Or is it only for use with Canton satellite speakers?
 
From what I can see that sub won't really support much of a power amp (70 warrs) and most likely wouldn't add too much to a modern HT system

Frankly, for your needs,I think your $$$ would be better spent on buying a modern powered subwoofer.

I think that sub would be better suited to being used at speaker level with satellites wired to it's output. I'm not sure if it blocks bass from them but I wouldn't expect too much from it in a HT system.

Thanks skipper....here's what I want to achieve.....have two Focal Chorus 706 bookshelfs and the associated center, two Rectalinear 3 lowboys, a Denon AVR-687 and a TV.....not interested in "home theater" sound, just accuracy for watching TV and streaming Spotify premium music by connecting my Audioengine B1 Bluetooth receiver attached with RCAs to the AUX on the receiver. Don't have a sub currently, want an accurate one for $120 max. Can get the Canon Plus C for about $70....will that sub work with this set up? are the characteristics of it superior in any way to new powered subs?
