Lately getting very into this Pat Metheny Group Album. When I first picked it up a few years ago I wasn't thrilled with it having grown accustomed to Pat's Brazilian period - First Circle, Still Life Talking and Letters From Home.

Imaginary Day is another masterpiece. Such incredible talent led by Pat and Lyle Mays. Lyle has got to be one of the best pianists on the planet.

I've been a fan since he released "Off Ramp" with Lyle Mays. That was a record that really pulled me into that genre of Jazz.

I recently obtained Imaginary Day and like it better with each listen.

Still Like Talking is my favorite (so far).
 
My favorite is a toss up between First Circle and Still Life. Lately Imaingary Day gets most play.

I was just surfing some reviews. This one says engineering of CD had problem I have read that the DVD Audio version is best. Check this out:

Sonically, the CD unfortunately has a problem. The recording and mix by Rob Eaton are excellent, capturing the subtleties of the almost dizzying number of instruments and added sounds going on. But the sound was ruined in the CD mastering process where mastering engineer Ted Jenson added an absolutely inexcusable amount of sonic compression, almost completely killing the dynamic range of this music that uses dynamics so effectively. Looking for a reason why this CD sounded so sonically squashed, I found, upon examining its digital audio levels, that for many of the tracks, including those with a musical ebb and flow, the sound level spent close to 90% of its time confined within the top 3 db available on a CD, out of an available dynamic range of over 90 CD. So the CD becomes a big disappointment on a good stereo system. The lousy mastering job also makes the recording sound cold and a bit shrill. This CD should definitely be recalled for remastering -- it won't be the first time this kind of thing has happened.

I have several Pat Metheny CD's, but not this one - I will have to check it out.
Lyle and Pat together have made some great music.

I think my favorite Pat Metheny CD is Letters From Home.
 
Playing "Pat Metheny Group - Travels" at the moment. After all these years it's still one of my favorite albums. "Still Life Talking" is a phenomenal album, so dynamic :thmbsp:

Pat Metheny & Lyle Mays...As Falls Wichita,So Falls Wichita Falls...1981 ECM records...still gets played round here.I like pretty much all their early stuff together,although some of his music gets a little too out there for my preference,or other family members listening to it,say during dinner,but I guess when you are a musical genius you have to keep challenging yourself to keep your chops up.
"Off Ramp" I really liked too.My brother turned me on to them on Vinyl the early eighty's.
He went to work and said here,have a Listen to this guy,he was better than his Music teacher.Really,I said.Wow,Talent.I was still playing them when he came home from work,transferring them to tapes to take home.
I really liked the one he did with Charlie Hayden?...My niece absolutely loved it.She woke up to it gently,early one Sunday morning while I was playing it quietly on my Pond patio,and she came out with a coffee and said what is that hauntingly beautiful uplifting Music.One of those magic music moments when our hearts are open.Of course then I had to give it to her.
I will have to check out some of his newer dvd releases to hear what he has been up to.

I enjoy Metheny in almost any setting. Of particular interest are the Metheny/Mehldau albums.
 
Imaginary day is a great recording that gets into the rotation in my house.
It did kind of go under the radar sales wise it seems...

Just yesterday I picked up a used CD copy of Offramp,
That brings back goood memories,As I was able to see
that tour in Seattle years ago.

Last year I picked up a copy of Lyle Mays ECM release "Solo"
That I think is Excellent if you like his piano work !!!

If you havent given the latest release a listen,I like it

Thanks for the tips. I just ordered The Way Up DVD - actually Brue Ray as I just got Blue Ray for Christmas. Also ordered the Imaginary Day Live DVD. Ordered from PM's site. Figured I'd give him as much of the cut as I can.

I like Offramp too. I use to hear Are You Going With Me on radio and didn't know which album it was - never picked up name of song on radio. Nowadays you just go the website and look at playlists :D

Will have to give that Lyle Mays Solo a try. I saw PMG several times. Best was at the Beakon Threater in NY right as Letter From Home came out. He had that Brazilian singer with him and it was great.

Got front row seats for his Syracuse NY tour about 5 years ago. I was memerized wathing Pat, Lyle, and Paul Wertico on drums. I'm not as thrilled with new drummer - saw him about 2 years ago in Buffalo at the University concert. Maybe that was The Way Up tour - in fact yes cause I have the T-shirt. They played The Way Up straight through. Then got into my favorite old stuff like Minuano.

If I had to pick an all time favorite song I think it would be Tell It All from First Circle. I can listen to that song all day. It so dynamic and passionate.

One of his very best. If you don't like that one not sure you'll like any. That happens to be one of my "deserted island" albums so you be hope you don't end up on same island :D

I love "
Imaginary day " saw the tour twice , really just an amazing disc , i also love Secret story a ton & also love Offramp , just got the Day trip cd which is really nice .

I wasn't as keen on Secret Story. But I like most of We Live Here - 'cept for the title track :yikes:
