Patience and Persistence Pays Off

Almost two years ago one of my elderly clients passed away. His wife told me they had enjoyed "an old stereo system" for years, but she didn't know how to work it. I told her about my interest in vintage stereo and I wanted to see what she had. She told me her house was a mess so I could not come over. After many attempts she finally let me in a few days ago. Turns out she was a hoarder (that's why I had trouble getting access). I left with the load pictured below. It'll be awhile before I can give these pieces the attention they deserve, but I'm a happy camper. Here is the list:

Dynaco ST-70, FM-3 tuner, tube Preamp--don't remember the model
AR- XA turntable and untouched original AR-3's with tietac type 3 emblems and all drivers work, original surrounds intact but dry

Awesome system! Should sound nice when you get it all cleaned up and pretty.

Good Luck,
Thanks,
John.:music::D

WOW! Original Mullard tubes no less! Definitely an entire set well worth restoring.

Great score!

Under the dust might just be a shiny base (re: Stereo 70). Dust is a protectorate isn't it? JK

Serious hoarder? :scratch2: ...Maybe you should ask if she has any LPs, or other gear "tucked away"!?!

In any case, CONGRATULATIONS on a nice little hoard there, already! :thmbsp:

That is a GREAT find! Congrats to you sir.

And yes, patience and persistence do pay off. Usually. :scratch2:

Oh God, my heart literally skipped a beat, and that's hard to do with the super pacemaker I have running it! You have a classic system that was the cornerstone at the AR listening booth in Grand Central Station. That combo, I think, sold a hell of a lot of AR speakers in the 60's. Clean it up and get everything working and do NOT change a thing. If you can get it all running together, then call the Smithsonian, they just might want it! I think the Dynakit preamp was the PAS-2, or possibly PAS-1.

I used to drop in to their booth when commuting to Greenwich CT from NYC and loved to listen to their speakers. I ended up getting AR4x speakers because the 3's were beyond my budget and my granddaughter is using them now.

CONGRATULATIONS!

Before putting all in temp storage, I took a paint brush to the ST-70 chassis. It's gonna be a beauty--rust and scratch free! I saw her LP collection. It was all pre-Elvis (Ray Coniff, Montavani, etc.) and no jazz. Not interested. There was no other audio gear except for a B___e "wave" radio/cd combo. Ditto not interested.

Congratulations! That looks like a great system. Please, keep us posted with more pictures as you clean and restore it.

If she had it hooked up(ie plugged in) and played ocassionally. You might want to do the same as well. to keep them caps in running order.

But if they werent pluggged in and played...please disregard. Enjoy.
