Well that piece was inspired by Sam Maloof who recently passed away at 93 with a 6 year backlog of orders. I was awestruck by the first and every piece of his work I saw. But what moved me to make a piece was meeting Sam on a tour and then taking 2 workshops with him. Among his accomplishments was being the only non-fine arts recipient of a Mac Arthur Genius Grant and then using the $800k to establish a foundation to promote craft. At 91 he worked 6 days a week and I asked him what his secret was and he said do something you like to do for a living. He was an amazing guy. Anyway Fine Woodworking mag did an article on him and choose to use a photo of the same piece that I based my console on. Made me feel pretty good.
